And to go even further off-topic onto the subject of strange catches, you've reminded me of something a coach once said.

He was volleying balls straight at me about head height and I fumbled one over my shoulder, only just keeping hold of it with a couple of twisted fingers. "That's the worst catch I've ever made" I said. He replied "There's no such thing as a bad catch."

Always liked that.

I like that too. I can think of a few times I wish I'd made a 'bad' catch.Embarrassed

Rather weirdly i find the bulk of a 4mm rollfinger glove make it almost harder to catch owing to lack of feel-almost too much shock absorbtion. I am exclusively using flat palms at the moment, and as long as the glove fits well on the hand i'm not having any problems.

However an ill fitting flat palm, either from bad sizing or loose fitting fingers-too wide and therefore suffering from finger twisting, horrendous to catch in, , especially in comparison to an equivalently bad fitting roll finger.

I am also a big fan of negative cuts and prefer the tighter fit of fabric gussets although am not too picky in this regard.

I've worn quite a few roll finger and negative cut gloves (reusch Bundesliga about 2002  has been my favourite NC) and just one thing I've found can happen with NC.  In any glove there can be a bit of "finger twisting" on some shots and found it a bit awkward when there was some twisting in a NC glove and you ended up with the seams on the ball.  Even with latex gussets on the fingers the seam can be felt some times.  Doesn't happen a lot but it did happen.  Never happens with a roll finger - it's always smooth latex on the ball.  With a rolled thumb as well you really do feel on every shot that there's nothing but latex on the ball.   Having said that the NC gloves generally give a great secure feel, Puma also make a nice NC for my wide hands.

What I mean by 'catch' is that he doesn't just tip or deflect it, does he? He pretty much tosses it right back where it came from, but he's not slapping it or palming it. It seems there's an element of control in it. I don't mean to be splitting hairs.

That save is almost like a scoop, like Justin said like almost cathing it then 'flicking' it away rather than a block or parry.

Here's how the Guardian reported it at the time, including a typically modest quote from Seaman:

"Instinct alone had Seaman snapping out his right arm, but once he had touched the ball there was dexterity as he juggled for a split-second to make sure it did not cross the line. "I thought it was in, to be honest," he said. "I just flung my arm and tried to get something on it."
