Hi,can anyone help me to identify the gloves worn by Dino Zoff,Dominique Baratelli,Jean-Paul Bertrand-Demanes and Emerson Leao in the 1978 world cup.I believe they were made by adidas, but have no further info.
I actually thought they were a very early Reusch glove. I did not think that Adidas had gotten inot the glove business in '78 BUT I could well be wrong!. We do have a few resident retro experts though so I am hoping that they will know the answer.
If they were an "Adidas" glove, then they were most likely made by reusch for Adi. In some of the very early reusch catalogues (well up to the mid-80s I think) they would show keepers in Adi gloves too. Shumacher (sp?) being the one on my gloves.
I've also seen team photos where the team wore all adidas. If the keeper had a glove brand other than adi or reusch then the gloves were blacked out in the photo. Haven't seen one of the photos for quite a long time though. The last one I remember was actually from the 86 world cup.
I think you are correct Jimmy. I always thought it was either Reusch or Uhlsport that had the first "branded" gk glove.
Just having a look through Falk Siemering's goalkeeping museum (one of the best reference points available IMHO) and the earliest listed catalogs for Adidas, Puma, Uhlsport and Erima is 1981 whereas Reusch dates to 1974.
I am thinking the 1978 World Cup gloves are somewhere between these 1974 gloves ..
and these 1981 gloves ...
the bottom glove was very good indeed. the green/white gary bailey glove a few years later was actually identical to this and had very good grip in all weathers too.

I'd have to go with a reusch glove as well BUT I'd put money on it that adidas had somekind of involvement along the line even if it was only becoming accustomed to the newly emerging goalie glove market and beginning to forge links with reusch say thru commissioning them to make a goalie glove.......
many thanks for all your replies, the gloves in jimmy's picture of emerson leao are exactly what i am enquiring about.i seem to remember some gloves in a sukan sports advert called "adidas curkovic",after the st.etienne keeper.adidas were big on inovation in 1978,with the tango ball, world cup 78 boot and black panel keepers shirt,so maybe the gloves were part of this?thanks for your efforts, any more info will be greatly appreciated.fantastic site, regards, paul.

I concur. Nice soft latex for it's day. My pair had no reusch or adidas badges at all, except for the tag on the inside. You can see them here:
