Hopefully im not the only one plagued with this, but after gloves have been used for awhile, especially the nike and ruesch gloves, my hands smell absolutely terrible afterwards and its noticeable to people standing around me so I was wondering if anyone has any tricks to quickly washing off the smell.

(Washing the gloves doesnt really help for some reason, especially with the nike gloves cause for some reason they lose some of the grip when they dry)

I find using specialist glove cleaner helps greatly.

It stops the bacteria build up, which i believe causes the smell and the latex remains soft and tacky. The Sell glove cleaning kit is VERY good.

Eurosport and some other sites sell "glove dogs" which you stick into your gloves that supposedly help fight off that smell. Just make sure you're washing your gloves after every use, I find that helps a huge deal.

I have never had a problem with gloves smelling, no matter the brand [Nike, Adidas, uhlsport, Reusch, Sells, Jako, D-Flekt, Valk,...] and I have to admit that I sweat quite a lot during trainings or games.  All my gloves however are washed after each session, being training or game.  They are always machine washed, with a mild detergent at 30° Celsius.

Never had a smell problem, durability issues or a loss of grip... I even find that the Nike gloves I have used always grip better after they have been machine washed, especially the Contact ones...

Yes those work very well except I believe they are now called "glove refs". Also you have to dedicate them to one pair of gloves so you may have to buy more than 1.

Yeah it works well and a bottle will last a very long time if you follow directions. I've had a bottle of the Uhl stuff which I use regularly for years.

At very least, wash the gloves in cool/luke warm water immediately after each use.  Don't let them sit in your glove/kit bag too long without washing them.

My gloves go in the shower with me after every game/training, so I don't have this problem.

You can't use regular laundry detergent when washing them in the machine–I trust you didn't do that. If the gloves smell you've built up quite a bit of bacteria. Best to toss them & start with a new pair. Wash them regularly (this means after every use!) & let them dry naturally. I've never had a problem.

erm... what should you use if washing them in the washing machine ?

I hated cleaning my gloves after a game... takes ages and now I always pop them in the wash at 30 with a dash of washing power (Fairy bio). They come up nice and white and seem to keep the grip fine.... but if there is an alternative i'll give it a go.

All manufacturers warn against machine washing, and I'd never do it with match gloves...but once they start to wear, or with training gloves, I've done it for years and it works great. The problem with using detergent is, because of the porous and absorbent nature of latex, some of the detergent is going to stay in there. One thing you can do is an extra cycle with just water, no detergent, to ensure a thorough rinse. Or skip the first wash with detergent altogether - you'll be surprised how clean they get with just water.

I say this understanding that the orthodoxy is machine washing is harmful to gloves, but as I say I've done it going on 20 years with no problems. But again, I don't do it with current match gloves. Those I only hand wash.

Justin do you just throw your gloves in as is with the rest of your gear or put them in one of those bags to stop the velco attaching to everything else? Or do you wash them on their own?

I wash them on their own. You mentioned the velcro, which to me is where the potential for physical damage comes in - you wouldn't want velcro rubbing on latex, so I make sure to strap them very tightly.

I should say it's not something I do very often, just when the build-up of rubber dust (from 3G turf) is beyond what hand washing can clean.

I've never tried any glove washes, which I guess I should some day.

The only gloves Ive ever had an odour problem with was my Uhlsport Excel Absolutgrips.....didnt wash them frequently

All the gloves I use now get washed when I have a shower after training and matches and I havent had the problem since
