30th November 1988 3.50

Steve Rook, Brighton, phoned me regarding the uhlsport footballs that they are owed, 15 Match balls, 20 size 4. I said that this was nothing to do with me although I would try to help if I could, but suggested that he contacted Line 7. He said that Line 7 had given him my name and told him to contact me. I said that I was only concerned with the goalkeepers and mentioned that this season they had not asked for gloves, and it was my information that their goalkeeper John Keeley now had a personal contract with Sondico. He did not know about this but said he would check.

1st December 1988

Posted to Reinhard this weeks issues of "Shoot" and "Match" as previously agreed.

2nd December 1988 1.05

Mark Prudhoe, Carlisle, phoned to request another match jersey as the existing one has ripped. I said that I would send him one if he continued to buy his gloves at special prices and 1 only 544 Green XL was sent to him (No.37).

6th December 1988 1.30

Roger Hansbury, Birmingham, phoned to request 2 pairs 034 size 9.5, and they were sent to him (No.38). He confirmed that he was no longer getting any Reusch gloves.

I understand that Dave Beasant, Newcastle, has now signed a 3 year contract with Reusch, as you will remember he was previously with Cannonball and you were unable to offer him a money contract recently.

8th December 1988

I bought and sent to Reinhard this weeks issues of "Shoot" and "Match".

While watching a televised indoor 6 a side tournament, which featured several reserve goalkeepers, I noticed that Kevin Poole, Middlesborough, was wearing Sondico gloves and Jonothan Sheffield, Norwich, was wearing Reusch gloves and a Reusch jersey. Both had previously asked for uhlsport goods this season.

9th December 1988 2.05

John Burridge, Southampton, phoned to request 1 pair 024 size 9 and a pair of gloves for his 6 year old son, 087 size 6, and they were sent to him (No.41)

9th December 1988 4.00

Lucie Boxall on Tel: xx , who is acting as financial advisor to Bryan Gunn of Norwich, phoned to ask about his contract offer. I confirmed that the offer was £xx for 1 year starting when his current contract expired on 12th December 1988. She said that he would like to stay with uhlsport but would like more money and a longer contract. I said that as far as I knew this was the final offer but what was he looking for if he was saying that £xx was not enough. She said that Reusch had offered £xx for the first year. I said that I was certain that uhlsport would not match this but would try and check up and get back to her on Monday.

9th December 1988 4.25-4.39

I phoned Peter Simmons of Scoreline to see how the scheme was working out with uhlsport, as I did not think that it was working out at all well. He agreed that there were problems that they had not anticipated and that it was causing more problems than it was solving, and therefore it was unlikely that they would look to have a similar scheme next season. He said that several goalkeepers did not like the jersey that they had been supplied with, the English made 590, because there was far too much padding. As I was anticipating that Bryan Gunn of Norwich would sign for Reusch from uhlsport, I checked as to whether he would be allowed to wear a Reusch jersey for Norwich (he presently wears the uhlsport 585). Peter Simmons said he would not be given permission to wear a Reusch jersey, only Scoreline or if he prefers, uhlsport. We agreed to keep in touch but as stated earlier he did not anticipate any agreement being renewed. He also said that he was disappointed at the lack of help and co-operation from both uhlsport and Line 7, which he felt had not helped the situation, although he agreed that Scoreline may have misunderstood goalkeepers and their requirements, thus contributing to the failure of the scheme.

10th December 1988 10.10-10.20

I phoned Reusch U.K. to discuss the situation regarding Bryan Gunn of Norwich as I suspected that they had not offered Bryan Gunn £xx a year. Being a customer of Reusch I know them well and can speak openly and honestly to them. They confirmed that Lucie Boxall had been lying to me as she had also lied to them. She told Reusch that Bryan Gunn was presently getting £xx (he gets 60% less than that) and that uhlsport were now offering £xx (we offered 60% less than that). Reusch said that they would make an offer, but when told that he was being offered £xx by uhlsport, (2.5 times more than we offered) their offer would be less than that not the £xx I was told. I also told Reusch that he would not be allowed to wear a Reusch jersey.

In my opinion many goalkeepers over estimate their worth, and when under contract are not prepared to help out with personal appearances etc. I believe that it is worth considering talking to Reusch and Sondico informally, to see if there is any sensible way of controlling the costs for everyone, without having to give away trade secrets to competitiors. As previously mentioned in these notes another problem is goalkeepers getting gloves from more than one supplier, which is unfair and costly to everyone. I think that uhlsport spend too much on promotion in the U.K., when compared to profits made on sales, which means either increasing sales, lowering promotional costs, or preferably doing both.

12th December 1988 9.10
