CHAPTER TWENTY

3rd May 1988 9.45

Notts County phoned to request a pair of trousers for Mick Leonard. They asked for Large, but I thought that Extra Large would be better, and therefore a pair of 554 XL were sent to him (No.100).

3rd May 1988 10.40

Nigel Spink, Aston Villa, phoned to request 1 pair 093 size 10 and they were sent to him (No.1). He also asked for a pair of 013 or 014 size 10 and a green goalkeepers jersey for his 4 year old son, he is the mascot at his testimonial game on 11th May, but neither of these items are available so could not send them. I did point out that a pair of 014 were sent to him on 19th April, only 2 weeks ago.

3rd May 4.24-4.31

Phoned Pat Jennings to inform him that regrettably uhlsport could not offer him any financial contract but would be happy to supply him with free goods for his own use. He said that he was supplied with uhlsport gloves for the Pele game in Japan, so assumed that uhlsport may have already entered into an agreement for this series of 4 charity games for Aids. He said that he would phone me again if he wanted anything.

5th May 1988 3.50

Michael Pollitt phoned regarding a letter he had received from Axel. He will start an apprenticeship with Manchester United in July. I had received a copy of his letter from Axel, but I told him that at the moment I did not know anything about it. The reason for this is that Axel had suggested special prices, but until a system is confirmed I am reluctant to say anything more. I need to know where the stock is coming from and at what price. Sukan has still not received any goods from the order placed with Line 7 at Bournemouth, over 5 weeks ago. Michael Pollitt's home number is xx .

9th May 1988 9.30

Gerry Peyton, Bournemouth, phoned to request some goods ready for the European Championships. He wanted from the stock I hold 1 pair 093 size 10, 2 pairs 554 trousers XL and they were sent to him (No.2). He also wanted 3 pairs 093 size 10, 2 pairs 024 size 10 and a large holdall, to be ordered from Germany. He leaves for Dublin at the end of the week but wants the goods sent to his home address unless I am told differently. He did not receive the gloves in time for the Ireland team photo, as discussed at Bournemouth, but wore a clean pair of 093, and will send a photo on when available.

9th May 1988 10.04-10.10

Phoned uhlsport and spoke to Gudrun, ordering the goods for Gerry Peyton along with a few other pairs of gloves for stock. Axel was in Japan but I asked if he could phone me on his return as I now urgently need to sort out what is happening next season, and all last week I was unable to get Claude Groleas on the phone. I tried during work hours, plus evenings and also both Saturday and Sunday, but no answer.

9th May 1988 2.55

Bryan Gunn, Norwich, phoned to request some goods as he has just been selected for the Scotland squad for their games against England and Colombia. 1 pair 096 size 10, 1 pair 015 size 10, 1 pair 573 trousers XL were sent to him (No.3). He also wanted an XL jersey but I did not have one. His contract is up on 12th December 1988, he presently gets £xx a year. He, like everyone else, has had a letter from Sondico which ends by asking the goalkeeper how much he would like to be paid for a contract. He wrote to Sondico and said that he would like £ xx a year (5 times his existing), to which they have replied by sending 2 pairs of gloves and offering him £ xx a year. (half of what he asked for) He asked me what uhlsport would be prepared to offer to renew the contract?

10th May 1988 9.10

H.D.Cocker Ltd., of Burnley phoned requesting a pair of gloves for Chris Pearce of Burnley. After some discussion 1 pair 096 size 9 were sent to him (No.4). The shop said that a contract between uhlsport (the Readers rep) and Chris Pearce was signed in his shop during the close season, summer 1987. He could not remember the contents but thought that it may have been for 1 year. He said that he had already had about 10-11 pairs of free gloves this season. I told him that I had previously had a conversation with Chris Pearce and that I was in the position where the goalkeeper was saying there was a contract, but he did not have a copy, and Readers telling me that they did not have any contract for him, and they cannot think that he would have a contract which stipulated that he could have up to 12 pairs of gloves a year. I also pointed out to the shop that since August 1st 1987 all contracted players were to ask for their gloves through me, but the first time that this was done for Chris Pearce was in March 1988 for 2 pairs. How did he get the other 8-9 pairs? The shop was very vague about the style required and uhlsport gloves in general which suggested to me that they cannot sell many uhlsport gloves, which again suggests that giving away gloves to 4th Division goalkeepers is not cost effective. I asked the shop the general question whether he thought that a 4th Division goalkeeper should get 12 pairs of free gloves a year, and in general he said no, but as he supported Burnley he wanted the Burnley goalkeeper to get free gloves. I did not wish to upset a Line 7 customer so I did not ask the next question that I wanted to "If you feel that he should get free gloves, why do you not give him gloves free of charge from your stock or at least contribute to the number of gloves he is given?" Finally he said that the Line 7 rep, Glenn Bullock, had been in and talked about a contract for next season. If this is true it will cause problems, I am trying to cut down on the goods given away free of charge and introduce a low price purchasing system, which will not be effective if others are offering contracts on uhlsports behalf, or is this Line 7 giving away their stocks?

17th May 1988 10.40

Les Fridge, St.Mirren, phoned to request goods for the summer and 1 pair 013 size 9, 1 pair 034 size 9, 1 pair 554 trousers Large were sent to him (No.5) at his home address xx .

17th May 1988 10.55

Sammy Chung, Stoke, phoned to check on my phone conversation with him on 21st April. I confirmed that the 9 jerseys and 8 pairs of gloves that he asked for would be supplied free of charge, although I said that uhlsport were not too keen on this amount of jerseys, but they had left it to me. He said that he would also like some trousers and I said that these could be supplied at a reduced price, but not free of charge. He asked for a pair to have a look at and I agreed to send him 1 pair 554 Large (No.6). He also said that when the free of charge gloves were supplied he would buy 4 pairs 040 size 8.5 for the youth team goalkeeper. He also wanted the jerseys as soon as possible so that he could get sponsors names and badges put on. I said that I was expecting next season's stocks aroung the end of June but I would see what I could do.

17th May 1988 2.05

Axel phoned from Germany regarding Sukan's "financial standing with Line 7". He re-assured me that there should not be any more problems as long as Sukan conducts the account properly in the future. He also asked about the gloves for Gerry Peyton. I confirmed that he wanted style 093 as that is what he has used all season and is used to playing with. We also discussed the promotional side and it was agreed that for now I would still get supplies from Germany and could set in motion the scheme to sell to goalkeepers with English and Scottish League clubs at Trade price plus 10%, and when sold I would pay to uhlsport in Germany the selling price less 33.3%.
