CHAPTER TWENTY SIX

22nd July 1988 2.40

Steve Sherwood, Grimsby, phoned to request some gloves. I informed him that as he was not under an existing written contract I could no longer supply him with free of charge gloves for a 4th Division club. However, I pointed out that Grimsby were now being supplied by Scoreline and that there will be an arrangement between uhlsport and Scoreline for the supply of jerseys and some gloves. I suggested that he contacts the club to find out.

22nd July 1988 4.10

Stuart Naylor, W.B.A., phoned for some goods and 1 pair 093 size 9, 1 pair 019 size 9, 2 pairs 040 size 9, 1 pair 554 trousers XL, 1 only 543 Silver XL were sent to him (No.46). He also asked about shorts, but I said that none were available. Stuart has not re-signed for W.B.A. and the expectation is that he will soon join a better club.

23rd July 1988

Received a letter from Mel Rees, Watford reserves, requesting a lot of goods including jerseys, shorts. I sent him some goods with a letter saying that his training gear, Watford wear Umbro, would have to be bought at special prices. He was sent 1 pair 034 size 9, 1 pair 014 size 9, 2 pairs 015 size 9, 1 pair 554 trousers XL, 1 glove bag (No.47).

Saw in a national newspaper that Alan Rough will be signing a 1 year contract with Celtic as reserve to Pat Bonner. Pat Bonner has apparently had a back operation since the European Championships and as Celtic had sold Allen McKnight to West Ham they did not have an experienced reserve.

23rd July 1988 4.30

Phil Parkes, West Ham, phoned to request a pair of 034 size 9.5 and they were sent to him (No.48).

25th July 1988 1.20

Bryan Gunn, Norwich, phoned to request another jersey and some more 019 gloves. 1 only 585 Green XL, 1 pair 019 size 10 were sent to him (No.49).

25th July 1988 4.30

Kevin Poole, Middlesborough reserves, phoned to see if he could still get free of charge gloves this season. I said that he could have about 5 pairs free and then after that could buy at special prices. 2 pairs 034 size 8.5 were sent to him (No.50).

26th July 1988 2.30

Jon Hallworth, Ipswich, phoned to request some goods as he had discussed with Phil Parkes. At the moment he is the Ipswich reserve goalkeeper, and all of the Ipswich keepers buy uhlsport gloves from Sukan, and will go on to the new special price scheme. As Phil had told him that he could get some free gloves I said that this time I would send him 2 pairs 015 size 8 and a glove bag (No.51). His home phone number is xx .

27th July 1988

Received goods from Germany and sent 1 pair shinguards to Nigel Spink, Aston Villa (No.52).

27th July 1988 1.45

Mr.Jeffrey of Carr, Clegg & Sons, Clarence Street, Stalybridge. Cheshire, phoned to request 100 + uhlsport Pro embroidered badges for the Scoreline order. He had been given my name by Peter Simmons of Scoreline. I said that I would pass on his request to uhlsport in Germany as soon as possible.

28th July 1988 1.37-1.43

I phoned Axel to ask about the badges for Carr, Clegg and he said that about 100 were sent months ago, but another 1100 had been sent recently. Although the sample jersey, and transparency supplied by Claude had 2 badges per jersey, Axel said that only 1 badge per jersey was now being used. He confirmed that the Scoreline jerseys and glove arrangements were going ahead with Sukan to supply from promotional stock the gloves.

28th July 1988 3.55-3.58

Telephone Carr, Clegg and left a message for Mr.Jeffrey that "I had telephoned Germany regarding the uhlsport badges, and was told that they were on the way".

2nd August 1988 4.20

Jack Burkitt of Fulham phoned to see the situation regarding uhlsport and Scoreline. I said that my understanding was that uhlsport jerseys were being supplied by Scoreline and 5 pairs of gloves free of charge. Additional gloves and training trousers could then be purchased at trade prices. I said that I had been trying to speak to Peter Simmons over the last 10 days without success, to finalise the details of how it would work. After speaking to Mr.Burkitt I again phoned Peter Simmons who was again not in so I left another message for him to phone me.

3rd August 1988 3.50-4.05

I phoned Peter Simmons at Scoreline as I had not heard from him. The situation seems very confused, and from my point of view unsatisfactory, as I am not being informed of the conditions of any agreement, but getting the complaints when things don't happen. I asked Peter Simmons about what happens at a club like West Ham, where I am told there is an agreement to supply 15 pairs of gloves free of charge, but the likely first choices Allen McKnight (Reusch) or Tom McAlister (Sondico) have personal contracts with uhlsport's competitors. Do the club still get 15 pairs free of charge? In the lower divisions do the clubs get gloves for 1st team keeper only, for example Mark Kendall of Wolves now has a Sondico contract, so does this mean that Wolverhampton do not get any free gloves? I then asked him about the various club team photos and he said that some clubs would not be wearing uhlsport jerseys because uhlsport were so late in delivering the jerseys. He also said that with the jerseys design there were problems with getting a sponsors names and logos printed on. I would have thought that this would have been realised earlier if it is a problem. I asked him for a list of contacts at the various clubs and they were given as follows: WEST HAM - Eddie Gillam, NORWICH - Jock Robinson, BOURNEMOUTH -John Kirk, FULHAM - Jack Burkitt, CARDIFF - Harry Parsons, WOLVES - Paul Darby, LEICESTER -Taff Davies, PRESTON - John McGrath, GILLINGHAM - Bill Collins, BLACKPOOL - Jeff Warburton, CHESTER - Harry McNally, MANSFIELD - Bill Dearden, HARTLEPOOL - Eddie Bennett, CAMBRIDGE - John Carter, GRIMSBY - Brian Glover, WALSALL - Tommy Coakley, PETERBOROUGH - Noel Cantwell. I will contact the clubs as best as I am able but now I am very busy with Sukan business so it is difficult to fit in the time.

3rd August 1988 4.10

Nigel Spink, Aston Villa, phoned to request 2 pairs 015 size 10, which he will use for matches and they were sent to him (No.53).

3rd August 1988 4.55

Alan Knight, Portsmouth, phoned to request 2 pairs 554 trousers XL and they were sent to him (No.54). I informed him that we could not help with padded shorts.
