CHAPTER THIRTY THREE

10th November 1988 9.15

Nigel Spink, Aston Villa, phoned to request 2 pairs 015 size 10 and they were sent to him (No.23).

11th November 1988 2.14-2.16

I phoned uhlsport to speak to Reinhard, but he could not be found at the time. Margaret said that he was around somewhere and she would ask him to call me.

11th November 1988 2.35

Chris Richardson of Scoreline phoned to request some gloves for Fulham. I told him that they had already received their free of charge quota and that they would have to pay for these at the special prices. I said that I did not think that the Scoreline/uhlsport system was working as well as it could or should. Most of the clubs involved had not taken gloves and many of the team photos appearing in football magazines show Scoreline jerseys not uhlsport. In particular the 1st Division West Ham United. He said that they had about 30 of the uhlsport jerseys in their warehouse, which surprised me as I had assumed that they would all have been distributed. The person I have spoken to previously, Peter Simmons, was on holiday but he would pass my comments on to him.

11th November 1988 3.55

Reinhard phoned me and I explained the Theo Snelders situation, which he would now look into as Holland is not part of his area. He said that as they were cutting back on expenditure they had decided not to produce a 1989 calendar. There would be a new big catalogue and he had received from Glenn Bullock photos of Neville Southall and Jim Leighton, but as yet no new ones of Peter Shilton which had been asked for. He asked me to send him copies of British football magazines so that he could try and keep up to date with the situation over here and this I agreed to do.

14th November 1988 5.15

Bryan Gunn, Norwich, phoned to request 1 pair 015 size 10.5 and they were sent to him (No.24). He normally takes size 10 but has a finger injury which needs strapping and therefore asked for a larger size. He also wanted a pair of trousers and these will be sent on when available, I confirmed the £xx a year contract offer for 1 year, his current contract expires on 12th December 1988. He says that he has offers from other companies, including Puma whose boots he uses, and will let me know when he has decided. I also told him that Bernd Killat was known to uhlsport, but does not work for them and had not been asked or authorised to offer him a contract.

14th November 1988 5.30

Phil Parkes, West Ham, called and collected 1 pair 034 size 9.5 (No.25).

15th November 1988 4.35

Terry Gennoe, Blackburn, phoned for some goods and 2 pairs 096 size 9 and 1 only 543 Silver XL were sent to him (No.26). I told him originally that the 096 was no longer available, but he said that he did not get on as well with the others so I decided to send him some from Sukan stock. He wanted the jersey as a change colour to wear in matches. I reminded him that I offered him jerseys at the start of the season but although he was happy to wear them the manager Don Mackay would not allow it. He said that he will persuade the manager to let him wear it. He also said that about 4 weeks ago he ran a goalkeepeing course for about 35 boys and he now has their names and addresses. He asked if they could be offered a discount or incentive to purchase uhlsport. I said that Sukan would be happy to sell to them but at our catalogue price, no discounts, and uhlsport were unable to supply direct. I told him that if there was a sports shop in Blackburn who stocks uhlsport they might be prepared to offer a discount scheme. However I said that I would tell the U.K. agents, Line 7, about it.

16th November 1988 9.35

Peter Fox, Stoke, phoned to see if I could help with replica jerseys of the 544 jersey he wears. He wants them for 4-6 year olds (he didn't say, but I would assume it is for his children) but I pointed out that the smallest that jersey is made in is 38/40", and no uhlsport jersey that is available in this country goes as small as he requires.

16th November 1988 10.25

John Lukic, Arsenal, phoned to request some goods for himself and the other goalkeepers at Arsenal.

1 pair 015 size 9, 1 pair 019 size 9, 2 pairs 034 size 9 for John Lukic, for Rhys Wilmot 1 pair 040 size 9.5, 1 pair 015 size 9.5, for Alan Miller 1 pair 015 size 9, 1 pair 034 size 9 while for Andrew Marriott 1 pair 015 size 9, 1 pair 034 size 9. They were sent (No.27).

16th November 1988 11.50

Les Fridge, St.Mirren, phoned to request the following 2 pairs 019 size 9, 2 pairs 040 size 9, 1 544 Green XL and they were sent to him (No.28).

16th November 1988 2.15

Hans Segers, Wimbledon, phoned to request some gloves and he particularly wanted a pair of 019 with Green trim and 1 pair 019 (Orange) size 9.5, 1 pair 019 (Green) size 9 were sent to him (No.29). He also wanted various items of clothing which I informed him were not stocked in the U.K. and would have to be ordered especially from Germany. A size Large 5 400 tracksuit Marine, 1 only 5 452 Silver Large top, 1 only 5 450 Silver Large trousers. I asked him about the contract and he said that he would sign and return it although he could not understand why it was only for 1 year. I said that I did not know, but that it could be because of having a new U.K. agent and not wishing at this stage to enter into new long term contracts.

17th November 1988 1.15

John Burridge, Southampton, phoned to request 1 pair 024 size 9, 1 pair 013 size 9 and they were sent to him (No.30). He also asked for uhlsport's address as he had some press cuttings to send them. I gave him the address and told him that Axel had left and if he preferred to send the cuttings to me, I would pass them on.

21st November 1988

Having received goods from Germany, I sent to Jim Leighton, Manchester United, 4 pairs 025 size 9.5 (No.31).

21st November 1988 12.20

Sammy Chung, Stoke City, phoned to request for Peter Fox and Scott Barrett 4 pairs 021 size 9, 4 pairs 040 size 9, 3 glove bags and they were sent to him (No.32).

21st November 1988 1.05

Les Fridge, St.Mirren, phoned to say that he has received an Invoice from Line 7 for goods supplied in September, Invoice 34841. I said that they were of course free of charge and that he should ignore the invoice and I would inform Line 7.

21st November 1988 3.50

Theo Snelders, Aberdeen, phoned to request 2 pairs 015 size 10, 2 pairs 040 size 10 and they were sent to him (No.33). I told him that I had passed on his comments to Germany about the contract, but as yet had not had a reply.

23rd November 1988 10.20

Alan Knight, Portsmouth, phoned to request 2 pairs 015 size 9.5 and they were sent to him (No.34). He also asked for a pair of trousers and I said that none were available but I would send a pair on as soon as I received more stocks.

23rd November 1988 1.55

Reinhard phoned to ask about Henry Smith of Hearts. I told him that a list of contracted players was sent about a week ago, but I would send him another copy with some football magazines tomorrow. Regarding Theo Snelders apparently he was offered money but refused it as he wanted to play for PSV Eindhoven, and apparently to play for them you have to wear Reusch/adidas. He confirmed that Heinz Scheben had said that no money was available for him this season anyway.

24th November 1988

I posted to Reinhard various back copies of "Shoot" along with this and last week's issues of "Shoot" and "Match" (No.35).
