CHAPTER THIRTY SEVEN

16th January 1989

I received a letter from Bryan Gunn, Norwich, in reply to my letter of 29th December. This letter confirmed that he would not be re-signing with uhlsport.

16th January 1989 10.45

Reinhard phoned regarding player contracts. He said to offer Theo Snelders £xx a year for 3 years, and he would think about Hans Segers request for more than the £xx a year offered. He had spoken to Erik Thorstvedt and would probably sign him for £xx a year, he would speak to him again tomorrow. Although he wore Sondico gloves yesterday he has not yet signed a contract with Sondico.

16th January 1989 2.22-2.28

I phoned Theo Snelders, Aberdeen, to say that the £xx was agreed and that he could have a 3 year contract. He said that he only wanted 1 year, not 3 years, as circumstances change and he wants to re-negotiate every year especially with the chance of playing for Holland because of Van Breukelen's injury. I said that uhlsport would agree to £xx a year and I would ask them to get a contract in writing for him.

16th January 1989 4.13-4.20

I phoned Hans Segers, Wimbledon, to tell him that I had passed on details of his Reusch offer to uhlsport and to not sign for Reusch until he hears from me again. He confirmed that the Reusch offer came from Germany, not the U.K. distributors, and that it was not only the larger amount, but the 3 and a half years compared to 1 year. I said that I would get back to him as soon as I had an answer.

17th January 1989 2.20

Les Fridge, St.Mirren, phoned to request some goods and 1 pair 034 size 9, 1 pair 040 size 9, 1 pair 554 trousers Large, 1 glove bag were sent to him (No.60).

17th January 1989 2.45

John Lukic, Arsenal, phoned for some match and training gloves for himself and other Arsenal goalkeepers. For John Lukic 3 pairs 015 size 9, 2 pairs 096 size 9, for Rhys Wilmot 2 pairs 015 size 9.5, 1 pair 096 size 9.5, for Andrew Marriott 1 pair 015 size 9, 1 pair 040 size 9 were sent to the club (No.61).

17th January 1989 2.45

One of the Arsenal goalkeepers, Alan Miller, is at present on loan to Plymouth in the Second Division and 2 pairs 015 size 9 were sent to him (No.62).

17th January 1989 3.55

John Burridge, Southampton, phoned to ask for some footless socks. I told him that although they were in the uhlsport catalogue, they were not available in the U.K. and therefore I could not help.

18th January 1989 3.50-3.56

I phoned Peter Simmons of Scoreline as I had not heard from him regarding Bryan Gunn wearing a Reusch jersey, see my letter of 29th December. He said that a letter was on its way to me but they had not done much about it as they were presently re-negotiating their contract with Norwich and did not want to upset the talks. I told him that my reason for phoning was that Norwich play in a televised game on Sunday and at the moment it looks as though Bryan Gunn will wear a Reusch jersey in this match unless Scoreline stop him. The agreement with Scoreline was not properly planned or discussed in advance, in my opinion, and that is why it has not worked as it should have done, and these problems are cropping up.

19th January 1989

I bought and sent to Reinhard this weeks issues of "Shoot" and "Match".

19th January 1989 12.05

Nigel Spink, Aston Villa, phoned to request 2 pairs of 015 size 10. I remembered that he had only been sent 2 pairs about 2 weeks ago (actually 3rd January) so I said that stocks were low and at the moment I could only send him l pair, and they were sent to him (No.63).

I spoke to Reusch about other matters and they confirmed that Bryan Gunn, Norwich, had signed a 3 year contract at £xx a year. This is half the amount that his financial advisor had said that they had offered him.

20th January 1989 2.00

Reinhard phoned regarding various matters. He said that for Theo Snelders £xx for 1 year was okay, but also offer him a 33% higher figure for a second year, and then another 25% on top of that for a third year. For Hans Segers he did not think that he was worth £xx a year for 3 years as offered by Reusch, but would confirm this later after talking to his boss Heinz Scheben. He said that Erik Thorstvedt had phoned him today and said that he would be signing for uhlsport. I also ordered some more promotional goods.

23rd January 1989 2.10

Stuart Naylor, W.B.A., phoned to request some 093 and 040 size 9. I told him that the 093 was discontinued and at the moment I did not have any 040 in stock in his size, but hopefully would get some more later this week. They were sent to him (No.64) on 26th January.

24th January 1989 1.50

Roger Freestone, Chelsea, phoned to ask for knee and elbow pads for tomorrow. I said that I did not keep any uhlsport pads and although I could try and get some it would not be possible to get them that quickly.

25th January 1989

Received a letter from Peter Simmons, Scoreline, confirming that they were not going to say anything about Bryan Gunn of Norwich wearing Reusch jerseys, rather than Scoreline. The letter also asked about sales opportunities with the Armed Forces.

25th January 1989 2.05

Nicky Johns, Q.P.*., phoned to request 3 pairs 034 size 9, 3 pairs 040 size 9. I told him that there would be a slight delay as they were not in stock but I would send them as soon as possible (Sent to him No.72).

I received a phone call from Sondico, asking if I could spare 2 pairs size 9 Match Pro gloves from my stock for Erik Thorstvedt, as he particularly wanted this style for a televised match next Sunday against Manchester United. I said that I only had a few pairs in stock and as they were not going to be able to supply me with more stocks for 4 months I could not spare any.

26th January 1989 1.50

Reinhard phoned me, I had phoned him but he was not there so had left a message for him, regarding the news about Erik Thorstvedt. When I gave him the news he said that he had recently spoken to Erik by phone and he had confirmed that he would stay with uhlsport. Reinhard said that he would contact Erik Thorstvedt. I also gave him Theo Snelders phone number as I had not been able to contact him and I thought that it was better for uhlsport and Snelders to sort out a contract between themselves. I asked about Hans Segers and he said that uhlsport could not increase their existing offer.

I bought and sent to Reinhard this weeks issues of "Shoot" and "Match".
