CHAPTER FOURTY FIVE

15th May 1989 9.55

Gerry Peyton, Bournemouth, phoned to ask if the goods he ordered at the Bournemouth Trade Show in March had arrived yet, and I said no. He was now needing gloves so 1 pair 015 size 10, 1 pair 083 size 10 and 1 pair 554 trousers XL were sent to him (No.11).

15th May 1989 4.10

Phil Parkes, West Ham, phoned to request 1 pair 015 size 9.5 and they were sent to him (No.12).

17th May 1989 9.50

Sammy Chung, Stoke, phoned regarding uhlsport jerseys for next season. I informed him that after his phone call to me on 3rd April I tried to speak to Peter Simmons of Scoreline without success, but eventually spoke to him on 5th May, when he said that Scoreline had Stoke City including goalkeepers jerseys, so that Stoke City could not use uhlsport jereseys in matches. Sammy Chung said that he had told Eric Partridge of the clubs liking for uhlsport and he had been told that Scoreline had an agreement with uhlsport. I told Sammy that Scoreline had decided not to continue with the agreement whereby they supplied uhlsport goalkeepers jerseys. Sammy Chung said that he would check again with Scoreline and then contact me again.

17th May 10.22

Sammy Chung, Stoke, phoned back to say that he had spoken to Eric Partridge of Scoreline, Tel: xx , who had said that Stoke could use uhlsport jerseys. He then asked for 12 jerseys and I said that was too many but I would stretch it to 8 the same as last season. He also wanted trousers and glove bags but I said they would have to be paid for, but both Peter Fox and Scott Barrett could still have gloves free of charge, which is more generous than other 2nd Division clubs get. 2 only 544 Sky (German) Large, 2 only 544 Silver (German) Large, 1 only 543 Silver (German) Large, 3 only 544 Green (Taiwan) XL, 6 pairs 040 size 9 were sent to him (No.13).

Peter Shilton, Derby, phoned to ask for some goods to be sent urgently to the England team's hotel. Burnham Beeches Moat House Hotel, Grove Road, Burnham. Bucks. 18th May 1989

Received from Reinhard a copy of his letter to Andy Goram.

18th May 1989

I bought and sent to Reinhard this weeks issues of "Shoot" and "Match".

22nd May 1989 10.30

Neil Ramsay, Neville Southall's agent, phoned to see if the goods recently requested had been sent. I informed him that a pair of trousers were sent the same day as his phone call, 12th May, but as he had been told at the time I could not help with leisurewear, shorts etc., as during the season Neville had received all of the items that were available.

22nd May 1989 2.02

Les Fridge, St.Mirren, phoned to request some goods for the summer and 1 pair 554 trousers XL, 2 pairs 019 size 9 were sent to him (No.15).

22nd May 1989 4.55

Reinhard phoned me to return a call I had made earlier in the day. He said that it was proving difficult to get information about printing gloves but he was still trying. He had also received information as to how the small German goalkeepers catalogue was being distributed and would send me a translation of the internal memo. I asked about mini gloves for sale and at the moment this was not possible but was being discussed within uhlsport at the moment. He told me that they would not be looking to buy trousers from Star Sportswear as they were too expensive. He asked me if I had spoken to Theo Snelders about a new contract and I said no, but I would mention it the next time I spoke to him. I also asked Reinhard about the uhlsport agent for Malaysia as Phil Parkes would be interested in doing some coaching over there if their agent wished to become involved.

24th May 1989

Having spoken to Claude the previous evening I sent him the transparencies of Neville Southall, Mike Stowell, Jim Leighton that Glenn Bullock had given me at Bournemouth.

24th May 1989 10.52-10.59

I phoned Richard Archbell of Star Sportswear to tell him the news that at the moment uhlsport felt that they were not interested in Star manufacturing for them on a world wide basis, but there was still possibilities for the U.K. and Scandinavian markets. I said that either uhlsport or myself would contact him if needed.

24th May 1989 11.40

Alan Miller of Arsenal phoned in response to my phone conversation with John Lukic on 6th April. We talked about a contract and said that he could either have a year goods only contract or if he wanted money it would be over 3 years total £xx say £xx first year, increasing to £xx second year and then increasing again to £xx in the third year. I really do think that he is the best prospect in England and at 18 years of age is worth taking a risk on. He said that for the moment he would sign a 1 year goods only contract as at this stage of his career he did not know what the future would hold. I said that if he changed his mind then please get in touch with me. He will be off in a few days for an international tournament in Toulon (France) with England Under 21. His home address is xxx no phone at the moment, but brothers mobile is xxx or his parents number is xxx . I sent him 2 pairs 040 size 9, 1 glove bag, 1 cap (No.16) along with a contract.

24th May 1989 12.15

Tony Godden, Sheffield Wednesday, phoned to ask for another 2 pairs 015 size 9 and they were sent to him (No.17). When he phoned on 11th May he expected to be coaching in Cyprus during the summer but now has accepted an offer to play in Sweden for 2 months at a Second Division team called Altiviborg.

25th May 1989

I bought and sent to Reinhard this weeks issues of "Shoot" and "Match".

30th May 1989 12.15

Matthew Dickins of Sheffield United phoned to request uhlsport sponsorship. I said that the best that he could be offered would be to purchase gloves at the special reduced prices, like Graham Benstead the Sheffield United first choice does. I told him that I would send the details in the post.

I watched the England v Scotland match on television with Peter Shilton using the 019 and Jim Leighton the new 036. The TV coverage proved to me what I had always suspected, and previously told uhlsport, that the lighter colours and name through the logo of the new 036 do not show up well on TV or in photos. The 019 were very clear and the style was obvious but the 036 was not very clear at all and difficult to establish what style they were. I believe that more importance should be given to such matters in the future, not only what the gloves look like close up, as in the past uhlsport have always been very good at making the styles easily identifiable. Andy Goram was the Scottish reserve goalkeeper and was only shown for a fraction of a second. I could not be at all sure but I would guess that he was still wearing the Sondico Match Pro gloves. Finally, I assume that Jim Leighton had got the 036 direct from Germany, as they are certainly not from me.

31st May 1989 1.10

Henry Smith of Hearts phoned to request some goods and 4 pairs 015 size 9, 1 only 543 Silver Large, 1 only 544 Green Large were sent to him (No.18). He wanted the goods now as the club are going on a tour to China in July and at least one of the games will be televised. He said that he will wear an uhlsport jersey in matches, which he cannot do in Scotland. I asked him about next season and he said that he will try to wear an uhlsport jersey but it depends on the club. His home address xxx Tel: xx .
