CHAPTER FOURTY EIGHT
6th July 1989 2.45
Bobby Geddes, Dundee, phoned to ask if there was any news on the goods he ordered through me. I told him that I had passed his order on by letter the same day, 9th June, and I know that my letter had reached uhlsport but I did not know if or when the goods had been despatched. I did also say that I was aware that some of the new items were subject to delays due to high demand.
6th July 1989 4.20
Nigel Spink, Aston Villa, phoned to say that he had decided not to renew his uhlsport contract that finishes this month, will sign again with Sondico. He was with Sondico before signing for uhlsport and he said the reason was superstition rather than money,as he felt that the most successful time of his career was when he was wearing Sondico. (This included 1 England cap and playing as substitute in European Cup Final). I told him that uhlsport would like to thank him for his support and wish him well in the future. I also pointed out in case he did not know that Sondico gloves were no longer made by Reusch and that most of the gloves are made up to size 9.5, he wears size 10 in uhlsport. He said that he had seen the gloves that he would now be wearing.
7th July 1989 10.20
Reinhard phoned me as he was under the impression that I had tried to phone him about Bobby Geddes. I said that I had not but as Bobby Geddes had phoned me, perhaps he had also tried to phone him. Reinhard told me that the promotional goods for Bobby Geddes would be despatched during week 21st-26th August. We agreed that I would contact Bobby to see if there was anything he wanted quickly which I could supply from my stock. I told Reinhard about Nigel Spink of Aston Villa signing for Sondico and to remind him to take out his photo from the leaflet sent with the gloves and future catalogues.
7th July 1989 10.30
John Lukic, Arsenal, phoned to request some goods and 2 pairs 015 size 9, 1 pair 040 size 9, 1 Royal casual shirt XL were sent to him (No.25). He asked about his next payment which is due and I said that I would ask Germany next time I spoke to them. I also thanked him for passing on my message to Alan Miller, the Arsenal reserve, who has now signed a 1 year goods only contract.
7th July 1989 12.40
Graham Benstead, Sheffield United, phoned to request some goods having returned his signed contract. 2 pairs 015 size 8.5, 2 pairs 034 size 8.5, 1 pair 554 trousers XL, 1 Holdall and an uhlsport catalogue were sent to him (No.26). I pointed out that many of the goods shown in the catalogue were not available in the U.K. and that his contract was basically gloves only.
7th July 1989 1.52
Reinhard phoned to check on the correct English wording for a leaflet that is being produced. I told him about John Lukic's phone call asking about his next payment and he said that it was on his desk to be done early next week so payment should reach his account in about a week.
10th July 1989 9.05-9.09
I phoned Bobby Geddes to say that his order would be despatched from Germany at the end of August and that if he was urgently requiring gloves I could let him have some from my stock. He said that he still had a couple of pairs so it was left that I would send him some when my new seasons stock arrived. I asked about jerseys and he said that they were for his own use, not to wear in matches (he asked for 5 jerseys). I told him that I would not be able to help with any tracksuits etc.
11th July 1989 11.50
Alan Knight, Portsmouth, phoned to request some goods and 2 pairs 015 size 9.5, 1 pair 031 size 9.5 were sent to him (No.27). He also wanted some other goods which I do not have to hand and I said that I would send on to him a pair of 036 size 9.5 and 2 pairs 554 trousers XL when available.
11th July 1989 2.55
Terry Gennoe, Blackburn, phoned to request some goods and 1 pair 031 size 9, 1 pair 040 size 9, 1 pair 019 size 9, 1 only 543 Silver XL were sent to him (No.28).
The jersey is for training, he will try to wear an uhlsport jersey in matches but in the past the club have not allowed it. He also wanted some trousers and I said that I would send a pair on as soon as they were available.
12th July 1989
I received a letter from Mel Rees of Watford asking for renewal of his goods only contract, and some gloves. He is 22 and only played 3 times for Watford and seems unlikely to get into their first team. He said that he is looking for a transfer and therefore I decided to send him a 1 year goods only contract to see how it works out for him. 2 pairs 025 size 9 were also sent to him (No.29).
12th July 1989 10.50
Les Fridge, St.Mirren, phoned to request some goods and 2 pairs 031 size 9 were sent to him (No.30). He also wanted sent on when available 2 pairs 036 size 9 and a glove bag.
12th July 1989 10.55
John Lukic, Arsenal, phoned to see if there was any news on his money. I confirmed that I had spoken to Germany and that it was being dealt with and the money should soon reach his account. He then asked if there was any possibility of bonus's on his contract and I said no. Any uhlsport contract offered is kept to and if the team is successful that is good for uhlsport but if the player is injured or not playing that is bad for uhlsport, but they do not ask for money back from the goalkeeper, so likewise they do not give extra if player does well. The time to discuss things like this are before the contract is signed.
13th July 1989
I bought and sent to Reinhard this weeks issues of "Shoot" and "Match".
13th July 1989 2.20
Reinhard phoned to say that Neville Southall's agent, Neil Ramsay, had phoned him to ask for some goods including gloves but he did not know which size or style of gloves. I told him size 8.5 and that he used a variety of gloves including 025, 019, 034. He said that he had also spoken to Theo Snelders of Aberdeen and agreed a 1 year contract for £xx , Theo had asked for £xx . We then talked generally about the high cost of goalkeepers contracts and my feeling that uhlsport give too much away. I also said that I was getting desperate for promotional goods and Reinhard said that he would try and hurry up the goods.
14th July 1989 4.55
John Burridge, Southampton, phoned to request some goods. He wanted new style gloves, trousers, knee and elbow pads. I told him that I could not help with any of these items although I did have some of our own knee and elbow pads not uhlsport, which I would send him. 1 pair knee pads, 1 pair elbow pads, 2 pairs 019 size 9 were sent to him (No.31) with other items to follow when available. He again asked for Reinhard's phone number and this I gave him.
17th July 1989 1.33-1.37
I phoned Reinhard to see if the promotional goods had left as I had now received some Sukan selling stock from Line 7. If I knew that the promotional goods were on their way I would send the goalkeepers goods from my stock and replace it later when the promotional goods arrive. Reinhard had not yet received an answer but would let me know as soon as he could.
17th July 1989 2.45
Reinhard phoned to say that some promotional goods had been despatched on 6th July, 031, 040, 083 gloves and 554 trousers. He was not certain if they had been sent direct to me or Line 7. I told him that I had just received the Line 7 price list that Germany had produced for them, and although not wishing to appear critical of him there were a few errors and I would write to him about it. Most of the errors were minor and very small, but could have been avoided.
