CHAPTER FIFTY ONE

11th August 1989 1.20

Reinhard phoned to say that he would look into the promotional gloves and let me know. The 544 jerseys were a problem with supplies expected in approx. 4 weeks. He also told me that he had spoken to Peter Shilton about E.X.S.L. and that he would attend if at all possible. He had written to, but not spoken to, both John Lukic and Jim Leighton.

12th August 1989 1.15

Tony Godden, phoned to see if there was any news, and I told him that I had just heard from uhlsport yesterday confirming that they could no longer offer him free goods. He said that he was now at Peterborough, 4th Division, and asked if he could get free gloves if he wore an uhlsport jersey. I said this was not of interest as basically all the promotional budget is taken up by First and some Second Division players. I said that if circumstances changed I would contact him to see if he was still interested.

12th August 1989 2.45

Phil Parkes, West Ham, called in to see me and discuss his Testimonial Year and to see if uhlsport can help. He has many events planned, including a trip to Australia in September for a special kicking contest during the grand final of the Australian Rules Football in Melbourne. This is being sponsored by Fosters Lager and has a first prize of 10,000 Australian Dollars. He asked if I had any uhlsport casual wear he could use and he took 1 only tracksuit, 1 holdall (No.51). I said that I would speak to Germany when the opportunity arose to see if they could help. I said that I would see if the uhlsport agent was based in Melbourne and wanted any personal appearances during the last week of September.

14th August 1989 10.18

Reinhard phoned me to ask if I knew Chris Neville of Ipswich Town. I said that I did not, but assumed that he was a youngster as the senior goalkeepers are Craig Forrest and Ron Fearon. I told him that Ipswich buy their gloves from me at the special League club prices and the person that I deal with is Sandra Mitchell. I also told him about Phil Parkes and his trip to Australia and asked about the Australian agent to see if he was based in Victoria, but the agent is in New South Wales. Reinhard took the details from me.

Having received promotional goods from Germany I was able to send to Alan Main, Dundee United, 2 pairs 015 size 9 (No.55).

He asked about shinguards which I said I did not keep, and a goalkeepers cap which I said they did but that there was none available at the moment.

I bought and sent to Reinhard this weeks issues of "Shoot" and "Match".

Jim McNamara of Line 7 phoned to ask me to send urgently to Erik Thorstvedt, Tottenham, 1 pair 036 size 9.5. They were sent to his home address xxx (No.57). Jim also said that he had supplied B.B.C. television with some goods for Frank Bruno the heavyweight boxer for a programme about Lloyd Scott a former Football League goalkeeper who now has a serious illness.

17th August 1989 1.00

Reinhard phoned to say that some of the promotional goods like 015, 036 were already on their way from Germany and others would follow as soon as they could. He had spoken to John Lukic and expected him also to be at E.X.S.L.

17th August 1989 1.55

Peter Shilton, Derby, phoned to say that he urgently required some gloves for Saturday and 2 pairs 036 size 9 were sent to him (No.58).

17th August 1989 3.50

Bobby Geddes, Dundee, phoned to say that he had received the gloves from Germany but was not happy as he had to pay £62 Tax to the Post Office before he could receive them. I asked him to send me the bill or details and I would try and sort it out for him. I also pointed out that if he got a few pairs of gloves from me when needed then this would not happen.

17th August 1989 4.05

Roger Freestone, Chelsea, called to get some shorts and 1 pair 550 XL were given to him (No.59).

21st August 1989

Received a letter from Jim McNamara of Line 7 regarding a sponsorship request from Mark McLean of Celtic. I have not heard of him and he is not Celtic first or second choice so I wrote and offered him the special prices available to League clubs.

23rd August 1989 11.26-11.29

I phoned Claude to tell him that Paul Stewart of Tottenham was wearing Hummel not Line 7 boots in Saturday's game. I had seen this in a newspaper photo and if I could find it would send the cutting on to him.

23rd August 1989

I bought and sent to Reinhard this weeks issues of "Shoot" and "Match".

24th Auigust 1989 9.35

Terry Gennoe, Blackburn, phoned to ask for 2 only 543 Silver XL and they were sent to him (No.60). He is now wearing this jersey in Division 2 matches.

24th August 1989 10.04-10.19

I phoned Reinhard to tell him about Bobby Geddes having to pay VAT on the gloves he had received direct from Germany. He could not understand the large amount, £62, but of course uhlsport would pay him back the money he has paid out and look into the whole situation. If the goods were supplied from U.K. stock this would of course get around the problem. Reinhard would like any documents or paper work that Bobby Geddes has to prove the amount.

I saw a television interview with Graeme Souness the Glasgow Rangers manager and he was wearing an uhlsport jacket.
