CHAPTER FIFTY THREE

While watching television I noticed that Glasgow Rangers used an uhlsport football against Bayern Munich, although on 9th September in a League game against Aberdeen they used a Mitre ball.

15th September 1989

I bought and sent to Reinhard this weeks issues of "Shoot" and "Match".

In "Shoot" dated 16th September on page 30 it says "Erik Thorstvedt, Tottenham's Norwegian goalkeeper, has an unusual and expensive habit. At the end of every match, he throws his gloves to the crowd." If this is true perhaps he could be asked not to do it.

18th September 1989

I visited E.X.S.L. yesterday during which John Lukic, Arsenal, asked for some 036 size 9.5 gloves and 4 pairs were sent to him (No.74). The size 9 sent to him recently were found to be too small for him, so he has given these to Alan Miller the Arsenal reserve goalkeeper.

19th September 1989 10.35

Trevor East, I.T.V. Sport, phoned to ask for a jersey that Peter Shilton is presently wearing as they are preparing a film for the opening sequence of televised football "The Match". He said that it was a Blue jersey, and I told him that to the best of my knowledge he was this season wearing the 544 Green, which Peter had confirmed when I spoke to him at E.X.S.L. 2 days ago. He said that it was important that they filmed the correct jersey so he would check again with Peter Shilton, as Peter had told him recently that he was wearing a Blue jersey.

20th September 1989

I received back from Rhys Wilmot, a signed goods only 2 year contract.

21st September 1989 10.25

John Burridge, Southampton, phoned to request some goods and 2 only 544 Green XL, 1 pair 036 size 9, 1 pair 071 size 9, 1 only glove bag were sent to him (No.75). He is trying to leave Southampton and said that it is likely that he will be transferring to Newcastle, or at least he hopes he will.

21st September 1989 1.30

Les Fridge, St.Mirren, phoned to request 2 pairs 036 size 9, 2 pairs 031 size 9, 1 glove bag and they were sent to him (No.76).

21st September 1989 2.25

Jim McNamara of Line 7 phoned regarding the jersey wanted by I.T.V. He asked if I had a 539 Blue jersey as this is apparently what they want. I said that I had never sold or stocked this item and told him about my conversation with Trevor East on 19th September.

22nd September 1989 9.19-9.34

I phoned Reinhard to order some promotional goods, mainly 015 gloves. Although in total I have reasonable stocks of promotional goods I am low in the popular 015 and I have learnt this week that although it is in their price list Line 7 do not have stocks and do not intend to keep stocks of this style. Reinhard also asked me about goalkeepers in Newcastle, and I said that possibly John Burridge would be moving from Southampton to Newcastle, otherwise the nearest uhlsport contracted player would be Tony Norman at Sunderland.

22nd September 1989 11.45

Alan Main, Dundee United, phoned to order 2 pairs 036 size 9 and they were sent to him (No.77). He also asked for shorts and I told him that I could not help with shorts for him.

22nd September 1989 2.20

Chris Neville a youngster at Ipswich Town (2nd Division) phoned to ask about sponsorship. He is the person who wrote to uhlsport in Germany requesting sponsorship, and he told me that he had not received a reply to his letter. (See my note of 14th August 1989). Ipswich now wear Umbro kit instead of adidas, and the goalkeepers are given Umbro gloves to wear. Over the last few years Ipswich have been buying gloves from Sukan, recently at the special prices, but now apparently the club has told the goalkeepers that as they are given Umbro gloves they should use them, rather than buying other makes, unless the goalkeepers pay for the gloves rather than the club. This does not matter for Chris Neville who is only a youngster, but the first choice goalkeeper, Craig Forrest, is also a Canadian international and uhlsport may wish him to be given gloves. Any comments?

25th September 1989 12.00

Jim McNamara of Line 7 phoned to ask about uhlsport contracted players in the Newcastle area. I repeated what I had told Reinhard on 22nd September that Tony Norman of Sunderland was the only contracted player in the area although John Burridge of Southampton is expected to sign for Newcastle in the near future.

25th September 1989 1.05

Alan Knight, Portsmouth, phoned to ask for some 015 gloves size 9.5 and I told him that I did not have any at the moment, so 2 pairs 036 size 9.5 were sent to him (No.78).

25th September 1989 1.35

John Burridge, Southampton, phoned to check that the goods he ordered last week had been sent and I confirmed that they had been sent by parcel post on 21st September. He is hoping to go to Newcastle this week as soon as one of the Newcastle goalkeepers, Gary Kelly, is transferred to Bury.

25th September 1989

I bought and sent to Reinhard this weeks issues of "Shoot" and "Match".

26th September 1989 10.15

Terry Gennoe, Blackburn, phoned to request some goods and 3 pairs 031 size 9, 1 only glove bag were sent tohim (No.79).

26th September 1989 2.10-2.17

I phoned Reinhard to order some 036 gloves for promotional stock, as I have just learnt that Line 7 are out of stock of this gloves and I get large demands for this style.

26th September 1989 2.50

Neville Southall's agent, Neil Ramsay, phoned to ask for about 24 pairs of gloves as Neville did not have a single pair of gloves to use. I said that I had sent him 4 pairs less than 3 weeks ago, and I was told that these had all been used and were now not suitable. I said that I did not keep that many gloves but would send him 6 match pairs and 6 training pairs, and 6 pairs 036 size 8.5, 6 pairs 096 size 8.5 were sent to him (No.80). Apart from the gloves I have supplied I think that he has also been getting goods direct from Germany. Neil Ramsay asked if I had any white padded shorts and I said no.

27th September 1989 10.10

Reinhard phoned to discuss various matters and to ask how much Sukan Sports bought from Line 7 each year. I also informed him that Chris Woods would not be in goal for Glasgow Rangers v Bayern Munich but that it would be Bonni Ginzburg the Israeli international. I said that photos of Ginzburg showed him wearing Reusch gloves, but were uhlsport interested especially as Israel still had a chance of playing in the World Cup Finals. We decided to see that he was wearing tonight before doing anything.
