CHAPTER SIXTY

10th January 1990

I bought and sent to Reinhard this weeks issues of "Shoot" and "Match".

11th January 1990 9.25

The mother of Stephen Reeves xxx Tel: xx , phoned, having been given my number by Line 7. They are looking for sponsorship as he is in the England Schoolboys Under 15 squad. I asked if he was the Stephen Reeves attached to West Ham, and he is, and I said that at present the club buy some gloves for him at our special reduced prices for League clubs.

I said that I would look into the request. I intend to ask Phil Parkes about him, and would contact them in the next few days with an answer.

11th January 1990 10.35

Jim McNamara of Line 7 phoned to ask about the Aberdeen reserve goalkeeper, Mike Watt, who has played in the last few games because Theo Snelders has been injured. I said that I knew he had been playing, and that Aberdeen have bought gloves from Sukan in the past, either Reusch at full price or uhlsport at the special reduced prices. Jim said that he had been given good reports about Mike Watt and that as he has heard Reusch have given him free gloves he would like to give him uhlsport gloves. I said that I would support whatever he wishes as for goods only contracts I have full authority, not having to check with Germany. He said that as he was in Aberdeen at the moment he would make further enquiries and contact me again if he wanted to sign him.

11th January 1990 2.25

John Burridge, Newcastle, phoned to request some goods and 2 pairs 036 size 9, 1 pair 554 trousers XL were sent to him (No.24). He also wanted 071 gloves, 578 trousers which I told him I could not help with.

15th January 1990 9.40

Gerry Peyton, Bournemouth, phoned to request some gloves and 2 pairs 015 size 10, 2 pairs 036 size 9.5 were sent to him (No.25).

15th January 1990 4.30

John Lukic, Arsenal, phoned to request some gloves and 2 pairs 036 size 10, 2 pairs 040 size 9 were sent to him (No.26). He asked me to check with Germany as his £xx due January 1st had not yet arrived. He also said that his contract was due for renewal in the summer, but I said no it was only half way through a 3 year contract, starting July 1988 ending June 1991.

15th January 1990 4.40

Jim McNamara of Line 7 phoned to say that after giving the matter some thought he would like to sign on a goods only contract Mike Watt, the Aberdeen reserve goalkeeper. I said that was O.K. by me and asked him to let me know the gloves required and size. He also asked me what I knew about the sports trade in Ireland, my answer was very little, as he had been asked to cover it for Line 7. I said that I could get him the addresses of some Irish sports shops from Irish football magazines that I have. I told Jim about the refusal of uhlsport/Line 7 to start a scheme designed to help everyone sell more uhlsport products, and the reason given being that it might upset retailers if Sukan Sports was mentioned. He said that on the information he knew about the scheme he did not agree and on the contrary it sounded like a good idea. He said that nobody had asked his opinion about it.

16th January 1990 9.18-9.47

I phoned Reinhard to ask about the money for John Lukic. He said that he did not know, but would ensure that it was sent. I asked if Tee shirts were being produced for the World Cup, and he said not that he knew of. I also asked if it was possible to get the shorts with logo's down the side and socks with logo on. He said that he thought that they were now being sold in Germany, not internationally, but he would try and find out prices. I told him that Jim McNamara had said he could not find a problem, on the information known, with the rejected scheme. I then asked Reinhard if it was possible on a trial basis to use the sticker system to offer the World Cup poster that was being produced. This would not involve selling goods, mentioning Sukan Sports or any other of these perceived problems. No great cost would be involved as the poster was being produced anyway. The response, if any, would be a good marketing guide and the names and addresses could later be used for other purposes. Reinhard said that he would need to think about it and check with Herve, and would contact me again in a week or so.

17th January 1990 10.35

Henry Smith, Hearts, phoned for some goods and 4 pairs 036 size 9, 1 glove bag were sent to him (No.27).

17th January 1990

I bought and sent to Reinhard this weeks issues of "Shoot" and "Match".

17th January 1990

I wrote to Stephen Reeves, England Schools Under 15 squad, in reply to phone call of 11th January to say can offer buying of goods at special prices.

17th January 1990

I received a letter from Philip Whitehead, Halifax Town, requesting Reusch sponsorship. At the moment the club buys Reusch gloves for him from Sukan Sports. I wrote back saying could not help with Reusch but again sent details of special prices for uhlsport goods. Halifax already had the details and have in the past bought some goods under the scheme.

19th January 1990 4.05

Gerry Peyton, Bournemouth, phoned to say that the 036 size 9.5 he recently asked for are too small and he will return them to me. He asked what gloves Erik Thorstvedt wore and I said that I had only ever supplied him with the 036. Gerry said that in the uhlsport literature he was wearing gloves with Red and Black backs, and I said that this was an old photo and I assumed had been made for him in the Norwegian national colours as this style was not in the normal uhlsport range.

24th January 1990 9.35

Les Fridge, St.Mirren, phoned to request some goods and 1 pair 554 XL, 1 only 585 Green XL were sent to him (No.28).

24th January 1990 10.25

Reinhard phoned to ask if I could give a name for the "Bermuda undershorts" now being used by footballers. I told him that although some players wore these shorts they were not as popular as on the continent. I said that I would try to find out what other companies called this type of short. He also said that John Lukic's money had not been sent but will by now be on its way to him. He asked if I had recently been supplying goods to Neville Southall or Neil Ramsay and I said that from memory the last time would have been about end of October. Neil Ramsay had apparently asked for 36 pairs of gloves for Neville.
