CHAPTER SEVENTY SEVEN

5th September 1990 9.10

uhlsport phoned to ask who would be attending E.X.S.L., I said Peter Shilton, John Lukic on Sunday, Neville Southall on Monday and I was still waiting for an answer from Erik Thorstvedt. I said that most of this information I had only just found out and had not had chance to tell Bernd, who I knew was at I.S.P.O.

5th September 1990

I bought and sent to Bernd this weeks issues of "Shoot" and "Match".

7th September 1990

I wrote to Diana of Park Associates enclosing details of E.X.S.L. including Stand Number P 160, for Peter Shilton.

7th September 1990

I wrote to Erik Thorstvedt, Tottenham, enclosing details of E.X.S.L. and asking him to phone me with an answer as to whether he would be able to attend.

10th September 1990 10.10

Erik Thorstvedt's wife telephoned to say that he would be attending E.X.S.L. on the Sunday, probably in the morning.

10th September 1990 10.11-10.17

I phoned Bernd to tell him that Erik Thorstvedt would be attending E.X.S.L. We also discussed his plans for when he was in England and I mentioned the "Shoot" presentation on the Friday, He thought that he would be spending 2 days with Jim McNamara and therefore would discuss it when we met at E.X.S.L. He confirmed that Herve had taken the trophy with him from I.S.P.O.

10th September 1990 10.21-10.26

I phoned Reinhard Hahn at uhlsport to tell him that I have been unable to get any football boot catalogues, having asked Jim McNamara to try and collect some for me. He said that he was not now coming to E.X.S.L., so I told him that I would try and get as many as I could at E.X.S.L. and send them on to him.

10th September 1990 12.05

Peter Stewart of "Shoot" phoned regarding the competition. I told him that the trophy was now in England and I would bring it with me when I visited them on Friday 21st September. I asked if Bernd could also attend the reception and he said yes as long as he knew in advance for security reasons. We discussed the competition and it was agreed that it would be based on the marks given in "Shoot" for the English 1st Division and Scottish Premier Division. Average marks would apply and also a panel with Phil Parkes would have the power to award extra marks if they felt they were warranted. I offered, and he accepted, to do the mathematical work for them of collating the marks. I ended by pointing out that uhlsport used their name as in their adverts, i.e. without any capital letters.

11th September 1990 11.05

Neil Ramsay, Neville Southall's agent, phoned to request a pair of gloves for Neville for this Saturday. He had phoned him from Denmark to say that he wanted a pair with the thinnest palm. I thought that this would be 031 and so 1 pair 031 size 8.5 were posted to him (No.39).

12th September 1990 10.50

Graham Benstead, Brentford, phoned for some goods and 1 pair 031 size 9, 1 pair 036 size 8.5, 1 pair 036 size 9 were sent to him (No.40). In the past he has had size 8.5, but feels they may be a little too tight so he is now trying size 9.

12th September 1990 11.50-11.54

I phoned Herve regarding the trophy, and he said that he would take it to E.X.S.L. He asked about videos and I said that I would take Saves Galore and the Peter Shilton Story with me to E.X.S.L. He also mentioned a new glove that they would have at E.X.S.L., stocks available early next year, and which is apparently better than any of the existing gloves.

12th September 1990 1.10

Henry Smith, Hearts, phoned for some gloves and 4 pairs 036 size 9 were sent to him (No.41).

14th September 1990 9.05

Theo Snelders, Aberdeen, phoned to see if I had any 043 gloves size 10 yet. I said no, and he asked me if I would chase Germany for him as he has also spoken to them earlier this week and they told him they did not have any. I said that I would check with uhlsport as they owed me some from an order I placed on 14th June.

14th September 1990 9.20-9.25

I phoned Bernd to ask about 043 size 10 gloves, and he told me that he had spoken to Theo Snelders earlier this week, and the gloves are not in stock and are not expected to be for 6-8 weeks. He then asked if Neville Southall had been getting gloves from me and I said yes and gave him some brief details. I then ordered some gloves for promotional purposes.

14th September 1990 9.30-9.32

I phoned Theo Snelders, and left a message with his wife that the 043 gloves are not expected to be available for about 8 weeks.

14th September 1990 4.55

Jeff Weston phoned me to order some goods for Kevin Pressman of Sheffield Wednesday, and 2 pairs 036 size 9, 2 pairs 040 size 9, 1 pair 015 size 9, 1 pair 554 trousers XL were sent to him (No.42). He also wanted some shorts, but I said that I did not have any available.

16th September 1990

I bought and gave to Bernd at E.X.S.L. this weeks issues of "Shoot" and "Match". During E.X.S.L. I discussed with Bernd and Norbert Huebner from uhlsport, my frustration at the lack of support for any promotional activity by Line 7. As I have said many times before I cannot understand why they pay me to do promotional work when they have no money to spend on promotional activity. I also spoke to Line 7 rep Guy Webb (Te: xx ) who asked if Neville Southall could do a shop opening. I told him that Neville and his agent would be attending the show on Monday and suggested that he ask them himself, but if it was not possible I would ask later.

17th September 1990 4.30

John Lukic, Leeds, phoned to apologise for not being able to attend E.X.S.L. as agreed on Sunday, but they had to go in for extra training on Sunday morning beacause they had lost at home on Saturday. He then asked for some gloves and 2 pairs 036 size 10, 2 pairs 040 size 9.5 were sent to him (No.43).

17th September 1990 5.00

Alan Knight, Portsmouth, phoned to ask for some goods and 1 pair 036 size 9.5, 2 pairs 031 size 9.5, 1 only 543 Yellow XL, 1 only 544 Silver XL were sent to him (No.44).

18th September 1990 9.30

Graham Benstead, Brentford, phoned to say that he had received the gloves and that the 036 size 9 were better than size 8.5. He said that he would return the pair of 8.5 and I sent to him another pair of 036 size 9 (No.45).

18th September 10.20

Ashley Bayes, Brentford reserve goalkeeper, phoned to ask if he could have free gloves like Graham Benstead. I told him that he could not have free gloves, but he could buy at special prices and details were sent to him in the post.

18th September 1990

I had spoken to Erik Thorstvedt at E.X.S.L. and he had asked for some gloves and 4 pairs 036 size 9.5 were sent to him (No.46). During E.X.S.L. we had asked Bernd for 2 pairs 559 padded undershorts XL to be sent for him.

19th September 1990 10.30

Jim McNamara phoned me from Line 7's offices to see if Peter Shilton could do a shop opening for Dixons Sports at Meadowfields in Sheffield. I said that I would check with his agent and let him know the answer. I then spoke to Guy Webb and told him that D.L. Sportscene had advertised in "Match" that Neville Southall would be at the opening of their new shop. He was surprised as he had only asked Neville on Monday, and the reaction he got was not very favourable. Bernd was going to check his contract to see if he should do some appearances as part of his contract.
