CHAPTER EIGHTY FIVE

8th January 1991 10.50-10.56

I phoned Bernd to tell him of my meeting with Herve, and to ask whether I could continue buying from Germany for the sales to professional goalkeepers. He had not spoken to Herve since his return from holiday, and he had to go to a meeting, so he asked if he could be given time to think about it and to speak to Herve before giving me an answer. He said that he would try to phone me back this afternoon.

8th January 1991 11.35

Phil Parkes, Ipswich, phoned to order some gloves and 1 pair 031 size 9.5, 1 pair 015 size 9.5 were sent to him (No.95).

9th January 1991

I bought and sent to Bernd this weeks issues of "Match" and "Shoot". I noticed on right hand centre page of "Shoot" a photo of Tony Norman, Sunderland, against Arsenal and he looks to be wearing Sondico gloves. He is no longer under contract to uhlsport. a 2 year goods only contract ended in the summer, but he has been getting free goods. The most recent goods were 4 pairs 036, 2 pairs 040 on 26th November 1990. The match photographed was played on 5th January 1991.

9th January 1991 2.15

John Burridge, Newcastle, phoned for some goods and 2 pairs 036 size 9.5, 1 pair 019 size 9.5 were sent to him (No.96). He said he wanted the green gloves he had seen on Screensport being used in Spain. I assumed he meant the 052 and I told him that this style was not available in the U.K. I then asked him about the photo in "Football Today" December issue, see my note of 3rd December 1990, and he said that the photo was from a game at Bristol City when the club left his kit behind so he had to look around the shops to buy gloves to use and in the Bristol shops he could not find any uhlsport gloves so bought Readers Real.

10th January 1991

I received a letter from Jason Speake, Cardiff City youngster, requesting sponsorship. I replied saying that the best he could be offered is to be able to buy at special prices and details were enclosed.

11th January 1991 10.12-10.27

I phoned Bernd, as he had not phoned me back like he had said he would try to. He had spoken to Herve who had confirmed the new situation to him. I asked about Germany continuing to supply me with promotional stock both for contracted players and to sell to other professionals, and he said that this could continue as before. He then asked me for John Lukic's address and I gave him the one I was given on 20th July 1990, which I thought was his parent's address, and I said that any goods I sent were to the club. I also told him that it looks as though Jim Leighton has signed with Hull City on loan. Bernd said that as far as uhlsport were concerned their contract with him was ended but he could of course have goods if he wanted them. He said in reply to my questions that he had written to Erik Thorstvedt (who apparently should still have to wear uhlsport when playing for Norway) and that he had received a letter of contract cancellation regarding Neville Southall.

11th January 1991

I prepared and sent to "Shoot", the latest table for the SHOOT/uhlsport Goalkeeper of the Year.

Jim Leighton did not after all go on loan to Hull City, instead they signed Kevin Dearden, the Tottenham 3rd choice.

15th January 1991 12.40

Eric Engstrom phoned regarding gloves for Ludek Miklosko, West Ham, also 2 pairs of trousers. I told him that I have no 036 size 10.5 although they are on order both with uhlsport and Line 7. I said that uhlsport had quoted February and I had no date from Line 7. I said that Line 7 were due to phone me later today and I would see what alternatives were available. I apologised for the delay but unfortunately I am in the hands of other people. 1 pair 578 XXL trousers, 1 pair 024 size 10.5, 1 pair 071 size 10.5 were sent to him (No.97).

15th January 1991 2.25-2.33

I again phoned Line 7, I had also phoned yesterday, to try and find out when we could expect delivery of 036 size 10.5. When I spoke to the lady yesterday she said that she would check with Herve, who was about to leave for 2 weeks, and phone me back today. She did not have an answer for me today either as apparently the person she needed to speak to in France was not at work today. I did check with her and she said that there was in Hayes 10 pairs 071 size 10.5, 3 pairs 578 XXL trousers and I said that I would place the order with Claude who was also due to phone me today.

15th January 1991 4.40-4.44

I phoned Eric Engstrom to tell him that 2 pairs of gloves and 1 pair of trousers had been posted to Ludek by first class post today and that some more 071 size 10.5 would be sent on in the near future.

17th January 1991

Having received a delivery from Line 7, I was able to send to Ludek Miklosko, West Ham, 1 pair 578 XXL trousers, 4 pairs 071 size 10.5 (No.98).

17th January 1991

I bouight and sent to Bernd this weeks issues of "Shoot" and "Match".

17th January 1991 10.20

Eric Engstrom phoned to say that Ludek had received the parcel. I told him that I had just posted another 4 pairs of 071 gloves and a pair of trousers. He said that Ludek would prefer the normal 036 and I again confirmed that they were on order from various sources and as soon as they were available some would be sent on to him.

17th January 1991 10.30-10.44

I phoned Bernd to ask him if there was any news on the outstanding promotional goods, particularly 036 size 10.5 ordered in October. He could not answer immediately but said that he would get back to me. He asked if Erik Thorstvedt and Neville Southall were still wearing uhlsport gloves, and I said yes although in Italy yesterday Neville Southall seemed to have a Sondico glove bag with him. I then said that I had seen Line 7's range and I was disappointed, in particular that all 3 red foam gloves 031, 040, 054 had been dropped. He said that the 040 was still available from Germany as was the 043 which some of the Scottish goalkeepers like. I asked if the APG leaflets were available to send out, he was not certain, as I felt it would be important to tell people about the new glove to try and persuade them to buy rather than just have the leaflet with the gloves once they had been bought. I also said that in my opinion the cosmetics on the APG gloves was not strong enough. Bernd did not agree. I also said that I had at last seen a Tunisian made 544 jersey and felt that it was not as good as the German or Taiwan 544's, beinga different weight of material and different sizing.

17th January 1991 12.25

John Lukic, Leeds, phoned to say that he had received a letter from uhlsport asking him to phone Bernd to discuss a new contract. He asked if he should discuss it through me and I said that it would be easier for him to deal direct with uhlsport as I had no authority or power to make decisions. I asked for his phone number so that I could ask Bernd to phone him. He said that he was not yet on the phone, should be in about 1 week, and when he was he would give me the number. I told him that I would tell uhlsport that the letter had been received. He asked if I had any spare goods, meaning tracksuits and leisure wear and I said no only gloves.

21st January 1991 11.45

Dundee United phoned to request some gloves for Alan Main, and 1 pair 040 size 9, 2 pairs 036 size 9 were sent to him (No.99).

22nd January 1991 10.16

Tom Carson's wife, Dundee, phoned to request some gloves and 4 pairs 036 size 8.5 were posted to him (No.100).

22nd January 1991 11.30

Les Fridge, St.Mirren, phoned for some goods and 2 pairs 031 size 9, 2 pairs 071 size 9, 1 pair 566 Large, 1 only 010 glove bag were sent to him (No.1). I asked him how he was feeling as he was badly injured about 2/3 weeks ago and had to have an operation but he said that he was expecting the O.K. to start training again next week.

22nd January 1991 4.30

Gerry Peyton, Bournemouth, phoned for some goods and 2 pairs 036 size 10 were sent to him (No.2).

23rd January 1991 9.35

Eric Engstrom phoned to ask for 2 pairs 578 XL for Ludek Miklosko, West Ham. I said that I did not keep this style in stock but would try to get them for him. In the meantime he should keep the XXL recently sent in case of emergency.

23rd January 1991 2.40-2.43

I phoned Line 7 to ask if any 578 trousers XL were in stock. I was told that they were, so I ordered 2 pairs for Ludek Miklosko.

23rd January 1991 4.15

Theo Snelders, Aberdeen, phoned for some goods and 2 pairs 043 size 10, 2 pairs 566 XL were sent to him (No.3). He also wanted yellow jerseys but I said that I did not have any.

24th January 1991

I bought and sent to Bernd this weeks issues of "Shoot" and "Match".

24th January 1991 2.35

Henry Smith, Hearts, phoned to request some goods and 4 pairs 036 size 9 were sent to him (No.4).

25th January 1991

Having received a delivery from Line 7 I was able to send to Ludek Miklosko, West Ham, 2 pairs 578 XL (No.5).

25th January 1991 12.50

John Burridge, Newcastle, phoned from his car to say that he had with him Colin Ludwig, who I had met about a year ago when Ludek Miklosko had first arrived in England. Newcastle have signed a Czechoslovakian goalkeeper, Pavel Srnicek, who desperately needs gloves size 10.5. I said that I had virtually nothing in stock in this size but would send what I could. 1 pair 040 size 10.5, 1 pair 019 size 10.5, 1 pair 071 size 10.5, 1 pair 554 trousers XL were sent to him (No.6). He is a Czechoslovakian Under 21 international and is now 22 years old. Work permit is not a problem because he has a French passport. Colin Ludwig told me that he uses uhlsport now, I am not sure if he is under contract, and I said that I would certainly supply him with gloves for now but I would have to check with uhlsport in Germany to see if he was under contract or what they would like me to do in the future.

I received from Sondico a copy of "Seton Sport & Leisure" dated January 1991. In 2 places it says that Neville Southall has joined their goalkeeping team, which suggests that he is already wearing Sondico gloves, rather than saying that it takes effect from next season.

28th January 1991 2.55

Neil Ramsay phoned to order some goods for Neville Southall, and 4 pairs 031 size 8.5, 1 pair 566 XL, 1 pair 554 XL were posted to him (No.7).

30th January 1991 9.20

Eric Engstrom phoned on behalf of Ludek Miklosko. He said that he would like some knee and elbow pads like the uhlsport ones he has. I said that these items were not stocked in the U.K., but I would try to get some from Germany but in the meantime I would send him a pair of each of the items that Sukan sells (No.8).

30th January 1991 12.20

Ken Veysey, Oxford, called in to see me. He wanted to know if he could get free goods now that his transfer to Oxford from Torquay had gone through. I said that at the moment the answer would be no, but I was seeing uhlsport tomorrow and would ask them on his behalf while I was trying to sort out other things. He then asked if he could have a new catalogue, and I told him that they were not yet available, but I would send one on as soon as I received some which I thought would be in about 4 weeks time.

30th January 1991

I bought and sent to Bernd this weeks issues of "Shoot" and "Match".

31st January 1991 9.35

Tony Norman, Sunderland, phoned to request some goods and 4 pairs 036 size 9.5 were sent to him (No.9). I asked whether he had been using Sondico, as a photo I had seen made it look as though he was wearing Sondico. He said that he had tried a Sondico glove on one hand in a game and played well, so in the next game again had Sondico on one hand and an uhlsport 036 on the other. He says that he is now back to wearing uhlsport. He had been given the Sondico gloves by Neville Southall when they met up for Wales. He is not under contract to uhlsport so I asked if he would be prepared to sign another contract with them and he said yes.
