CHAPTER EIGHTY SIX
31st January 1991 1.10-4.20
Bernd called in to see me with Claude. The general situation was discussed with the following related to the promotional work. I told him that John Lukic had phoned me and that as soon as he gives me his phone number I will pass it on to Bernd. I told him about Tony Norman's phone call and he said offer him goods only, and if he asks for money Bernd is prepared to offer £xx as long as he is playing in the First Division. I told him that Ludek Miklosko would like knee and elbow pads, and he made a note for some to be sent to me. I also told him that Alan Main's contract was due to end soon and if I am contacted about a new contract I will pass the information on. I also showed Bernd the Sondico news letter mentioning their signing of Neville Southall. He asked me to keep him informed of any developments. While saying that I would do what I can, I did point out that I am no longer paid or expected to give "knowledge" only act as a packer or to pass messages, and he can always ask Herve about what is happening amongst U.K. goalkeepers.
31st January 1991 3.20
Erik Thorstvedt, Tottenham, phoned to ask for some 036 gloves size 9.5. We then generally discussed his move from uhlsport to Sondico which he said was due to money. I did not have any 036 size 9.5 left, promotional stock was ordered 14th December and not yet received, and therefore did not send any gloves straight away.
31st January 1991 4.40
Bryan Gunn, Norwich, phoned to see if I could give some gloves to the Norwich reserve Mark Walton. I said that he could not have free gloves but I would send him details of the special prices. Bryan's own contract with Reusch ends in December, and I said that he can contact me if he wants an offer from uhlsport at that time.
31st January 1991
I sent to Tony Norman, Sunderland, 2 copies of a goods only 2 year contract.
1st February 1991 11.35-11.37
I phoned Line 7 to speak to Herve about trying to get 036 size 9.5 gloves. I was told that Herve was not there and that I should try again in 10-15 minutes. I asked the lady if they had 036 size 9.5 in stock and she said that she thought so but was not sure.
1st February 1991 12.02-12.06
I phoned Line 7 and spoke to Herve. He said that they did not have 036 size 9.5 in stock, and that no stocks of this item had arrived from Germany for me. I told him that Erik Thorstvedt wanted 6 pairs, could he help? He said that he would try France.
1st February 1991 4.05
Alan Knight, Portsmouth, phoned to order some goods. He is recovering from a broken hand and asked if there were any gloves with finger protection. I said that there was 024 but I did not have size 9.5, but would send size 10. 1 only 543 Silver XL, 1 pair 024 size 10, 1 pair 071 size 9.5, 1 pair 054 size 9.5 were sent to him (No.10).
5th February 1991 9.25
Bobby Geddes, Kilmarnock, phoned for some goods and 2 pairs 036 size 8.5, 1 pair 054 size 9 were sent to him (No.11). He really wanted 040 size 9 but I said they were not available and would he accept another red palmed glove. He also wanted trousers which I said I would send on when available. He also wanted the phone number in Germany which I gave him.
5th February 1991 4.05
John Lukic, Leeds, phoned for some gloves and 3 pairs 036 size 10, 1 pair 031 size 9.5 were posted to him (No.12). He also gave me his phone number xxx to pass on to Germany for them to phone him regarding a new contract. He also asked me to chase Gerrmany for his £xx payment due January 1st which he says has not arrived.
6th February 1991 11.57-11.59
I phoned uhlsport to try and speak to Bernd, but he was not there. I left a message for him to telephone me.
7th February 1991
I bought and sent to Bernd this weeks issues of "Shoot" and "Match".
7th February 1991 10.23-10.26
I phoned Line 7 to see when the 036 size 10.5 gloves and 568 shorts had been despatched as they had not arrived. Last Thursday I had been told by Claude that they were on their way to me. I was told that they had not yet been despatched but would be today. I then asked if the 036 size 9.5 for Erik Thorstvedt had arrived from France, and the answer was not yet.
8th February 1991 9.35-9.48
I phoned Bernd to pass on the information about John Lukic, and asked him to phone John about a new contract and give him the answer about the January 1st money. I also ordered promotional stock, including the APG gloves 060 and 061 , and said that as soon as I received supplies I would send a pair to all of the contracted goalkeepers as uhlsport wanted these gloves to be used by the professionals. He told me that he had spoken to Neil Ramsay about Neville Southall ordering gloves both from me and Germany. He wants me to continue supplying him but not to send too much. He also said that he did not want Neville to carry a Sondico glove bag. Neil Ramsay had told him that he had probably used it because he did not have an uhlsport bag. Finally I asked if he had learnt much from his trip and he said yes and he had been encouraged by a lot of what he had seen and heard with Claude. I had also mentioned that Line 7 had taken at least a week to put a label on promotional stock they had received from Germany for me.
8th February 1991
Because of Bernd's comments I sent to Neville Southall 2 only 012 glove bags (No.13).
8th February 1991 12.55
Andy Rhodes, Dunfermline, phoned to ask if he can get a one piece suit. He says he presently has a yellow XL. I said that there was nothing in the U.K. but I would check with Germany. His phone number is xxx .
8th February 1991 1.05-1.08
I phoned Bernd to ask if the 453 one piece suit was still available and he said yes but could not give me the price. I ordered one in XL and he said he would let me know the price later.
8th February 1991
Having received a delivery of promotional stock ordered 16th October I sent 4 pairs 036 size 10.5 to Ludek Miklosko (No.14
12th February 1991 11.30
I received a phone call from Amanda Trewin of Brian Biefeld Films wanting to get some goods for Peter Shilton and one other goalkeeper regarding a film they are making. She wanted them urgently, like today, and had phoned me because she had been unable to get Line 7 on the phone. I told her that I had also been trying to speak to Line 7 both today and yesterday without success. I said that I had certain items available if she wanted to come and collect them. She then asked if she could get them in London and I said that apart from Line 7 the only way would be to go into a sports shop and buy them. I suggested that the biggest stockist in London is probably Soccer Scene in Carnaby Street.
12th February 1991 1.25-1.28
I phoned Bernd to see if he had a price yet for the 453 one piece suit, ordered on 8th February for Andy Rhodes. He said that he did not have a price and Margret was on holiday. I told him that I had been trying to get a price from Line 7 but when I phoned on 8th February the lady could not tell me as she would have to check with Herve. When I tried to phone yesterday and today I could not get any answer from Line 7.
12th February 1991 4.35-4.38
I phoned Andy Rhodes, Dunfermline, to say that I can get a 453 Yellow one piece suit XL for £92.95, and that I have already ordered one from Germany and when it arrives, I don't know how long, it will be sent to him at the club.
12th February 1991 4.50
Peter Shilton phoned regarding some gloves and jerseys for his needs and he will probably be doing a TV commercial on Monday. I said that on his normal 544 Green XL jersey all I had was one from Line 7 which was not as good as the German ones that he had previously had. On both the jersey and 036 size 9 gloves I told him that I had ordered with Germany in December but had still not received them, I also sent him some shorts in case he needed them. 1 only 544 Green XL, 1 only 544 Turquoise XL, 1 pair 566 XL, 2 pairs 036 size 9 were sent to him (No.15). Others will be sent when available. He also asked about the new APG gloves and I said that they were not yet available to me.
13th February 1991 11.55
Rhys Wilmot, Plymouth, phoned to request some goods and 1 only 544 Sky XL was sent to him (No.16). He also wanted some 036 size 9.5 but I told him they were not available at the moment and I would send some on when available.
13th February 1991 1.56-2.03
I phoned Bernd to tell him that in "Sports Update" trade magazine, Sondico were listing new Southall Pro Stop, Thorstvedt Pro Max gloves for 1991. No mention was given of the fact that they are under contract until June/July with other companies. I said that the gloves would presumably be on show at Bournemouth next week, which I feel infringes contracts. Reusch are taking action for loss of business and other damages regarding Sondico and Chris Woods as they are in the same position. Bernd asked if Southall was still wearing uhlsport gloves and I said yes, the 031. Bernd also said that my recent order for promotional stock had been put through and I reminded him that I was still waiting for goods ordered in December and I told him yesterday I had to say no to Peter Shilton.
13th February 1991 3.55
Bernd phoned to say that they did not have any 453 one piece suits in XL, only L. I said send the Large and I will try to get Andy Rhodes to take this. It is now discontinued and there is really no alternative. He then asked about various players contracts and I went through it with him.
13th February 1991
I bought and sent to Bernd this weeks issues of "Shoot" and "Match", along with a photocopy of the page from "Sports Update" that I had mentioned.
14th February 1991
Having received a small delivery from Line 7, I sent to Erik Thorstvedt, Tottenham, 4 pairs 036 size 9.5 (No.17).
I understand that Pat Bonner, Celtic, will be wearing Reusch gloves "officially" for the first time in the international against England next month. He has been wearing Reusch generally throughout this season, but with the name covered over.
15th February 1991 2.40
Bernd phoned to ask if I knew about a German newspaper report that Leeds United had signed a £6 million contract over 3 years with a top clothing company. I said that I had not seen anything but at the moment the kit suppliers are Umbro and the sponsors name on the shirts is "TOP MAN". To the best of my knowledge Top Man are general clothing retailers, not really in to sportswear. He then asked if I knew anything else about Sondico and Thorstvedt and Southall, as Neil Ramsay was pressing uhlsport for money. I said I did not know anything more than I had already told him, but I assume that full details will be at the Bournemouth trade show. He said he really needs something in writing and could I phone Sondico for catalogues/price lists.
15th February 1991 2.55-2.57
I phoned Sondico and they said that details of their new range would be at Bournemouth and catalogues etc. are being posted out in the next week or so.
17th February 1991
I made a special trip to the Bournemouth Trade Show to try and help Bernd as he had told me that he was anxious to know what Sondico were doing with Neville Southall, as Bernd was still withholding a payment owed to him. The trip involved 6 hours of travelling (3 hours each way by a working on the line disrupted British Rail) on my one day off a week, Sunday.
18th February 1991
I wrote to Bernd with my comments about my Bournemouth visit and sent with the letter a copy of the Sondico price list dated May 1991. Their catalogue was not yet available and should be sent in about 3 weeks. My overall impression was that all Sondico were trying to do was show their range for the 1991/92 season and were not deliberately trying to knock their competition, like uhlsport. However it must be realised that they know who I am and perhaps they would say different things to other retailers, but this I obviously do not know.
20th February 1991 10.20
Les Fridge, St.Mirren, phoned to request some goods and 1 only 544 Turquoise XL was sent to him (No.18). He really wanted a 585 jersey but I said that I did not have any available for promotional work. He also wanted a pair of 554 trousers XL which I told him were not in stock at the moment, but I would send a pair on when available.
20th February 1991 2.35
Bernd phoned to see if I had any further information about Sondico and Neville Southall as he had today had quite a strong discussion with Neil Ramsay. I told him that I had made a special trip to Biournemouth and sent a letter and price list to him the next day, Monday. I repeated the main points to him on the phone. I also ordered some 031 and 083 for promotional stock but he does not want them sent to contracted goalkeepers as they are discontinued styles. I then asked what jersey he wants Peter Shilton and others to wear next season, and he said that this should be Herve's choice.
