CHAPTER EIGHTY SEVEN

21st February 1991

I bought and sent to Bernd this weeks issues of "Shoot" and "Match".

21st February 1991 1.20

Gerry Peyton, Bournemouth, phoned to order some gloves and 2 pairs 036 size 10, 1 pair 071 size 10 were posted to him (No.19). He also wanted some 578 trousers XXL which I do not keep in stock and I said that I would try and get 2 pairs for him.

22nd February 1991 10.10-10.16

I received a mail shot from Sondico and phoned Bernd to tell him about it. The mail shot included a list of contracted goalkeepers at 13th February 1991 and listed amongst others were Neville Southall and Erik Thorstvedt.

22nd February 1991

Having taken photocopies for my records I sent the complete Sondico mail shot to Bernd. (No.20).

22nd February 1991 2.45

Michael Watt, Aberdeen, phoned for some goods and 2 pairs 043 size 9, 1 pair 566 XL were sent to him (No.21).

24th February 1991 1.00

Phil Parkes phoned me at home to say that John Vaughan, Cambridge United 3rd Division and in last 8 of F.A.Cup, had contacted him regarding a glove contract. He has used uhlsport gloves for many years but I said the situation was the same as last year when he was given 2 pairs of gloves free of charge but no contract. I told Phil that I would offer John Vaughan the same again this year. Apparently he has been offered goods/contract by other companies but he prefers uhlsport gloves.

25th Februaery 1991

I wrote to John Vaughan, Cambridge, outlining the situation and sending him 2 pairs 015 size 9 (No.22), but no contract. In the letter I said that if the F.A.Cup run continues a better offer may be made.

26th February 1991 9.55

Peter Fox, Stoke, phoned to request some gloves and I told him that the style he normally has, 040, is not available at the moment in size 9. He said he would accept an alternative so 2 pairs 031 size 9 were sent to him (No.23).

26th February 1991 1.30

Keith Granger the former Darlington goalkeeper phoned to see if he could have some 036 size 9 gloves. I have also previously sent him gloves as requested by Jim McNamara. I told him that I could not give him any gloves and the best that I could do would be to let him buy at the special prices for Football League clubs, although he was no longer eligible. He has been playing for Basingstoke Town and training with Southampton but has no club at the moment.

At the Everton v Liverpool F.A.Cup replay on 27th February Neville Southall was wearing 031 gloves, but was again carrying on to the pitch and keeping in the net a Sondico glove bag. It was a different style to the one he was carrying a few weeks ago, and I had sent him 2 uhlsport bags on 8th February.

28th February 1991

I bought and sent to Bernd this weeks issues of "Shoot" and "Match".

28th February 1991 1.50

Terry Gennoe, Blackburn, phoned to request some goods and 2 pairs 031 size 9 were posted to him (No.24). He also wanted some trousers but I said that I did not have any at the moment but would send on when available..

5th March 1991 10.50

Neil Ramsay phoned to request some 031 size 8.5 gloves for Neville Southall. I told him that I probably only had a couple of pairs available and that this style was now discontinued. After checking I only had 1 pair 031 size 8.5 so I also sent 1 pair 054 size 8.5 to him (No.25). He went on to say that he was having problems with Germany and that he was going to issue a writ against them. He told me that uhlsport were complaining about Sondico selling Southall endorsed products while he was still under contract to uhlsport. He said that Sondico were only saying that Neville Southall was with them for next season. I said that I could not agree as I have been sent, as have every other retailer, a sheet saying that he was a Sondico goalkeeper and it was dated 13th February 1991. I said that I would send him a copy of this sheet and the Seton newsletter from January 1991, for his information.

5th March 1991

I wrote to Neil Ramsay and sent him the various information listed above.

5th March 1991 1.45-1.55

I telephoned Bernd to tell him what I was doing about Neil Ramsay. He agreed that it might help. I asked about promotional goods and he said that he could not check if anything was on its way as Margret was not there. I asked about the new APG gloves and he said that some had been sent out from Germany, but he did not know if any had been sent to the U.K. He did say that they had sent Peter Shilton some gloves direct from Germany about 2 weeks ago. I then asked if the new catalogue was available and he said that Herve had taken a few from I.S.P.O. but the bulk would not be sent for 1-2 weeks, when the next shipment of goods is sent.

5th March 1991 2.07-2.10

I phoned Line 7 to try and speak to Herve about APG gloves, leaflets, uhlsport catalogues, advertising, jerseys for Shilton etc. The young lady said that he was not available at the moment, but he would phone me back.

6th March 1991

I received a request for sponsorship from Martin McArdle, Queens Park Rangers apprentice. I said no but sent him details of the special price scheme.

6th March 1991

I prepared the latest tables for the SHOOT/uhlsport Goalkeeper of the Year Award, and sent it to "Shoot".

6th March 1991 4.50

Herve phoned to return my call of yesterday. He said that some 060, 040, 376 were on their way from Germany as promotional stock. I asked about the 036 and he said nothing was sent as far as he knew. I asked him which jersey he wanted Peter Shilton and other goalkeepers to wear next season and he said 659 Green/Grey.

7th March 1991

I bought and sent to Bernd this weeks issues of "Shoot" and "Match".

8th March 1991

Having received a delivery from Line 7 I sent to Peter Shilton 2 pairs 036 size 9 (No.26).

8th March 1991

I sent to Rhys Wilmot, Plymouth, 2 pairs 036 size 9.5 (No.27).

8th March 1991

I sent to Gerry Peyton, Bournemouth, 2 pairs 578 trousers XXL (No.28).

8th March 1991 2.00

Claude phoned me about various things, including that probably Peter Shilton will be asked to wear the 648 jersey in Lilac/Yellow, rather than the 659 Green/Grey Herve had told me 2 days ago.

12th March 1991 12.30

Les Fridge, St.Mirren, phoned to request some goods and 2 pairs 036 size 9, 2 pairs 071 size 9, 1 only cap were sent to him (No.29). He also asked again about trousers and I said that I was still awaiting stocks.

12th March 1991 2.35

Eric Engstrom phoned to ask for some goods for Ludek Miklosko, West Ham, and 2 pairs 036 size 10.5, 1 pair 568 XL were sent to him (No.30). He really wants plain Black 562 shorts to wear for Czechoslovakia v Poland on March 27th in Olomouc in Moravia. I told him that they would have to be got from Germany but I would do my best to help.

13th March 1991 9.50-9.54

I phoned Bernd to ask about 562 shorts for Ludek Miklosko, which I had noticed were not in the new catalogue. He said that he would check and get back to me. I also asked if any promotional goods were on their way yet, he again said he would let me know. I asked if he had contacted John Lukic yet about a new contract, and he said that Herve was doing it.

13th March 1991 12.10

Bernd phoned to say that 060, 040, 376, Pads were on their way from Germany to Line 7, but the 036 would not be available for about 2 weeks. I asked about other goods like 031, 544, 554, 061, 083, 453 and he said that he would have to check and get back to me. He said that there were no 562 Black shorts left so I said that I would send Ludek Miklosko 566 and 568. I mentioned that in the new catalogue John Lukic was still shown as Arsenal rather than the correct Leeds United, and that I was very surprised to see a photo of Jim Leighton. He said that this was a mistake.

13th March 1991 12.50

Bernd phoned again to say that in the next shipment 453, 083, Tracksuit for Gerry Peyton, 544, 554 would be sent. There were no more 031 available. I then asked if he had an answer about the PLAIN VELCRO 019 gloves first asked about in January. He said that he had forgotten but would let me know later. He did not know what colour 019 Line 7 was selling.

13th March 1991

I posted to Ludek Miklosko 1 pair 566 XL (No.31), with a note saying that the 562 were no longer available.

14th March 1991 11.48-11.57

I phoned Herve to ask if the promotional goods had arrived from Germany, he said not yet but they were expected tomorrow. I asked what exactly was there in the 040 and he said 5 pairs (size 9 - 1 pair, size 9.5 - 2 pairs, size 10.5 - 2 pairs). I could not believe this as I ordered in 2 different orders 44 pairs. I asked if he would get for me from France at NO CHARGE 040 size 9 -10 pairs, size 9.5 - 10 pairs, size 10 - 10 pairs and he agreed after I pointed out that to supply promotional stock to the goalkeepers I had to first buy it from Line 7 as I could not get it free of charge from Germany. I then asked if he would send me some 036 NO CHARGE and he said no because he only had a few pairs in stock, so I would have to buy them. I did therefore agree to buy them. I then asked if he had contacted John Lukic yet and he said no. He then asked about the situation with Tony Norman (a goods only contract has been sent but not yet returned, and he does appear on Sondico's list of contracted players), Alan Main (contract due to expire, no new offer made by me), Ludek Miklosko (18 months left on goods only contract), Henry Smith (due to expire in summer and Herve said that his contract will automatically carry on). It is nothing to do with me but it would not be a contract that I would offer, I think £xx a year for a 35 year old not presently in the first team, is not the best way to spend the limited money available.

14th March 1991

I bought and sent to Bernd this weeks issues fo "Shoot" and "Match".

14th March 1991 1.12-1.17

I phoned uhlsport and spoke to Margret, Bernd was in a meeting. I told her about the 040, only 5 pairs being sent although 44 pairs on order. She agreed this was correct and said that the next delivery was expected in 6 weeks. I also pointed out the problem of having to buy gloves from Line 7 to give away to their contracted players. I asked for any help she can give and she said she would talk to Bernd.

18th March 1991 9.20

Herve phoned to ask for the phone numbers of Tony Norman and Henry Smith. I could not give him the information immediately and said that I would phone him back. He confirmed that he would get some promotional 040 for me from France.

18th March 1991 9.40-9.43

I phoned Herve to give him the address of Tony Norman xxx but no phone number, and address xxx and phone number xxx of Henry Smith. I asked Herve about the possibility of my getting France Football as had been intended about 3 years ago, which I had recently mentioned to Claude, now that financially we were going back to the original arrangement. He said no.

18th March 1991 9.55

Graham Benstead, Brentford, phoned for some 031 gloves which I told him were no longer available. He then asked for 040 which will not be available for some weeks. After a discussion I sent him 2 pairs 054 size 9, 1 pair 015 size 8.5 (No.32).

18th March 1991 12.30

John Lukic, Leeds, phoned to order some goods and I said that I was very low on gloves, but I was able to send him 1 pair 036 size 10, 1 pair 031 size 9.5 (No.33). He also said that as far as he could make out with his bank he had not received the £xx January 1st payment from uhlsport. He had previously asked me about this on 5th February and I had asked Bernd who said that it was dealt with. There was a bank transfer of £xx which he did not know where it had come from.

18th March 1991 12.54-12.56

I phoned Bernd to ask about the payment to John Lukic. He at once told me that he may not have received payment as Herve was due to pay him and then uhlsport would pay Line 7. I reminded him that when I had previously queried this in February I was given a different answer. I do not like getting complaints when it is not my fault.

18th March 1991 1.00-1.04

I phoned Herve regarding the money for John Lukic and he said that it had not been paid because uhlsport were so slow in repaying Line 7. He said that he had told John Lukic on Friday to contact him if he had any queries. I asked Herve, like I had asked Bernd, to try and sort it out as surely the goalkeeper should be paid and contracts honoured.

18th March 1991 1.35-1.39

I phoned John Lukic to tell him of the situation and offer my apologies. I told him that I had asked both uhlsport and Line 7 to sort out between themselves who should pay, and that one of them should pay him as soon as possible.
